It's been several months since the latest Green Day CD has been
released, and for those who enjoy loud, somewhat aggressive music that
remains committed to melody and ambitious songwriting and structure
(IMO), it's a triumph. The "rock opera" comparisons to the Who's
"Tommy", and Husker Du's "Zen Arcade" are repetitively mentioned in
reviews of this disc. I've
never been a huge Green Day fan in the past, but this disc is either
the beginning or the end of landmark recordings for this group that
will be hard to equal.
I'm looking for interpretations of the subject matter and characters
in the recording that are scholarly, but not pretentious, and not
simply confined to reviews of the recording. This can include the
band members' own interpretation of the subject matter, but I'm
primarily looking for well written rock journalism that enhances the
context and the understanding of the recording. Research and
identification of quality sources of writing that may be beyond the
scope of the usual search engine strategies are greatly appreciated
and will be rewarded with a tip for extra effort.
