Question ID: 45401
I have 1992 Mazda 929 and need links to sites that sell speakers for
my car. Front ones are 5x7 and back ones are 6x8 or 6x9 (im not sure).
The problem is that I already bought speakers in the store but had to
return it after I noticed that I have some sort of crossover in the
trunk where the cd changer is, and that original speakers are unusual.
There are 4 wires connected to "each" speaker both front ones and back
ones. All the speakers I looked at in the store have only 2
connectors. I tried searching on the net and figure out where to buy
such speakers with 4 connectors but could not find real explanation. I
even attempted to connect 2 wires to the regular speakers i bought but
I only got bass or treble depending on which 2 wires i connected.

What I am looking for is the explanation about this car wiring *AND*
links to sites that sell "speakers with 4 connectors" (i believe 2
connectors are for bass and 2 for treble). I am not looking for sites
to regular speakers or links to speakers like components where it will
force me to mount two separate speakers in different locations. Each
speaker must have 4 connectors. Thanks!

Do you have the 6 or 12 speaker model?

What you have is an external crossover that splits the frequencies
into high and low before the speaker. That crossover is tuned to the
factory speakers. If you tried to connect other speakers in there, it
just wouldn't sound right.

Your best bet is to cut into the wire before the crossover and run the
two wires up to whatever 6x9" speaker you choose.

Just my $0.02, tho...

it is a 6 speaker model. 2 tweeters on the dashboard, 2 in both front
doors and 2 on the back. I am only looking to replace front door ones
(5x7) and back ones, 6x8 or 6x9.

You will pay way too much for an exact replacement, given the age of
the car.
www.partsexpress.com or www.mcmelectronics.com have good substitutes.
Find something that fits the cutout (more or less). Choose 8 ohms
unless you know better. Remove the external crossover to get back to
two wires. Hook + and -
the same way on all speakers.
