Dear jamon-ga,
Figures vary for the 2002 telethon and there is certainly different
views as to whether it was for Palestinian charities in general or the
families of the bombers.

?Telethon for Palestinian victims highly successful
The three-day radio and television campaign for donations in support
of Palestinian victims that ended yesterday raised U.S. $ 109.56

cars, jewelry and gold. The Saudi Committee for the Support of Al-Quds
Intifada urges citizens and expatriates to continue to donate to those

Saudi Embassy, Washington - News summary - March/April 2002
?Commenting on the U.S. coverage of the Kingdom?s recent fund-raising
telethon for Palestinians, he affirmed that the aim of the campaign
was to provide humanitarian assistance to the Palestinian people, who
face on a daily basis killing, destruction and displacement as a
result of Israel?s military aggression.
Appearing on Fox News, Mr. Al-Jubeir concurred, saying: ?We have made
it very clear in terms of where Saudi funding is going to ? [it] has
gone to humanitarian assistance to the families who have suffered as a
result of the Israeli occupation and the recent Israeli aggression,?
he said. ?We do not support suicide bombers.?

?Earlier in the week, U.S. officials seemed more skeptical. Secretary
of State Colin Powell told a Senate panel on Wednesday there were
indications some of the $100 million collected in a Saudi telethon may
have gone to elements of the Islamic military Hamas organization [?]
There are troubling aspects as to how that telethon money would be
distributed," Powell said. He said he would raise the telethon issue
with Saudi officials.?

The $77 million raised in Thursday's telethon falls short of the $155
million raised by a 2002 telethon on Saudi television to help the
families of Palestinian ?martyrs? [?] Saudi Arabia has long maintained
that none of the money raised in that telethon went to the families of
suicide bombers.
