Daer jamon-ga,
In the news reports I have found, separating the private from the
public is quite difficult, but Saudi Arabia held a telethon for
members of the public and it is reported that $82 million was raised.

"Saudis responded enthusiastically to a telethon staged to raise money
for victims of the Asian tsunami disaster, donating $82 million, after
the top oil exporting country had pledged a mere $30 million."

Thanks for the quick response. I wanted to compare the two telethons
Arab aid to familys of suicide bomber to that of Tsunami victims.
Would it be possible to confirm the total dollars (euros) given for
the telethon for Familys of suicide bombers.

Dear jamon-ga,
Figures vary for the 2002 telethon and there is certainly different
views as to whether it was for Palestinian charities in general or the
families of the bombers.

Saudi Embassy, Washington
04/14/2002
?Telethon for Palestinian victims highly successful
The three-day radio and television campaign for donations in support
of Palestinian victims that ended yesterday raised U.S. $ 109.56
million in cash. In addition, there were donations in kind, such as
cars, jewelry and gold. The Saudi Committee for the Support of Al-Quds
Intifada urges citizens and expatriates to continue to donate to those
in need.?

Saudi Embassy, Washington - News summary - March/April 2002
?Commenting on the U.S. coverage of the Kingdom?s recent fund-raising
telethon for Palestinians, he affirmed that the aim of the campaign
was to provide humanitarian assistance to the Palestinian people, who
face on a daily basis killing, destruction and displacement as a
result of Israel?s military aggression.

Appearing on Fox News, Mr. Al-Jubeir concurred, saying: ?We have made
it very clear in terms of where Saudi funding is going to ? [it] has
gone to humanitarian assistance to the families who have suffered as a
result of the Israeli occupation and the recent Israeli aggression,?
he said. ?We do not support suicide bombers.?

Fox News
?Earlier in the week, U.S. officials seemed more skeptical. Secretary
of State Colin Powell told a Senate panel on Wednesday there were
indications some of the $100 million collected in a Saudi telethon may
have gone to elements of the Islamic military Hamas organization [?]
There are troubling aspects as to how that telethon money would be
distributed," Powell said. He said he would raise the telethon issue
with Saudi officials.?

14 April 2002 Dawn Newspaper, Pakistan
?In an unprecedented show of support for the Palestinian resistance
movement, intifada, the people of Saudi Arabia have collected nearly
Saudi Riyal 350 million ($93.3m) in cash and another about SR100m in
kind , until the early hours of morning on Saturday, during a marathon
television campaign. The Saudi Committee for the Support of Al Quds
Intifada organized the marathon television campaign.?

National Review, July 15, 2002
?The Saudi Committee for Support of the Intifada Al Quds -- Al Quds is
the Arabic phrase for Jerusalem -- spearheaded a much-publicized
$109.6 million Saudi fundraising telethon for Palestinian "martyrs,"
and is also the subject of the most damning evidence.?

January 6, 2005 CNN
The $77 million raised in Thursday's telethon falls short of the $155
million raised by a 2002 telethon on Saudi television to help the
families of Palestinian ?martyrs? [?] Saudi Arabia has long maintained
that none of the money raised in that telethon went to the families of
suicide bombers.

PLEASE NOT THE "MYRTERS FAMILIES" SHOULDN'T BE MISUNDERSTOOD. MAIN
STREEM RELIGIOUS THOUGHT AND MOST CLERGY MEN IN SAUDIA DO NOT CONSIDER
SUACIDE BOOMBERS AS MYRTERS - BUT THOSE KILLED SLEEPING IN THEIR HOMES
WHEN BOMBED BY ISRAELI F22- OR SHOT TO DEATH BY ISRAELI SOLIDERS - ARE
NAMED "MYRTERS"

Quil,
This is a very important distinction not understood by many people,
including myself. The one way to begin to understand the complexity of
the situation is to continue to ask questions. I don?t believe either
side is being fairly represented in the news. A perfect example was
the CNN report stating the proceeds for the telethon were for the
families of the suicide bombers.
Although if you look at the total number of people killed by Israel
attacks and the total number of people killed by the tsunami, would
this reflect a bias of the Arabs toward the Palestinian people and a
prejudice against the non-Arab muslins.
I ask because I want to understand. Please be patience with my questions.
Thank you for bringing this to my attention.
jamon
