Dear Judy,

I have not been able to find a case between “Angie Roller” and Dant.
The only case I have found so far was a case where Dant would not
enter into a collective bargaining agreement: Wilhelm Construction
vs. Kentucky State District Council of Carpenters, AFL-CIO that was
heard by the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit in
Cincinnati in 2001.

Could this labor law be the case you are wondering about, or might
there be another?

Please advise, and I will look forward to hearing from you.

This was not the case I am referring too. She was fired by the
company and my husband was her boss at the time. She did settle the
case out of court but that is all I know. Hope you can help.

Dear Judy,
Please see Expertlaw's comment below . . . he/she is correct.

Usually, though not always, the only cases that are published and
available in the public domain are those that have been appealed from
a trial court, or those that were tried in a federal district court
and resulted in the judge writing an opinion. Since the case you are
interested in was settled "out of court" the only record available
will be in the court's file. Contacting the court clerk, as Expertlaw
has suggested, will yield you the information you seek, unless (in the
unlikely event) it is sealed.

The court clerk is your ticket to the information.

It can be very difficult to find information on cases that were
settled. The best source of information may be the case file. Call the
clerk's office at the courthouse where the case was filed, and ask how
you can review the file. (You should call ahead as the case is closed
and thus may be archived.) The file is a public record, so they will
let you view any unsealed portions of the file - and it is very
unlikely that any portion of the file is sealed.

You can also order a copy of the file. I have encountered courts
charging $2 per page, and other courts that charge a reasonable flat
fee for copying a file no matter what its size.
