What were the names of the Suffragan Bishops of the Archbishop of
Bamberg, Jacobus von Hauck (Archbishop from 1912-1943)? I am looking
for the name of Heinrich Himmler's uncle who, according to Rolf
Hochhuth's "The Deputy," "stood godfather to him," and was "the
Suffragan Bishop of Bamberg." This man was a key figure in Himmler's
SS and died in a cell at Nuremburg before the trials ever began.
Edmond Paris mentions this Jesuit priest in his "The Vatican Against
Europe."

Dear ericjonphelps-ga

Thank you for allowing me an opportunity to answer your interesting question.

According to CATHOLIC-HEIRARCHY.ORG the Archdiocese of Bamberg
consisted of only three separate dioceses. Though there were a few
suffragans that served prior to the ones listed below in the very
early years of Jacobus von Hauck, Archbishop of Bamberg?s time in
office, the Suffragans during the era of von Hauck, serving during the
time of World War II were:

BISHOP MICHAEL RACKL, DIOCESE OF EICHSTÄTT
(4 Nov 1935 Appointed - 5 May 1948 Died)

BISHOP LUDWIG SEBASTIAN, DIOCESE OF SPEYER
(28 May 1917 Appointed - 20 May 1943 Died)

MATTHIAS EHRENFRIED, DIOCESE OF WÜRZBURG
(30 Sep 1924 Appointed - 30 May 1948 Died)

While I cannot say which one might have been Himmler?s uncle, these
are indeed the names of the Suffragan Bishops you specifically asked
for in your question. Hopefully you will find who you are looking for
among them.

Below you will find that I have carefully defined my search strategy
for you in the event that you need to search for more information. By

It seems to me that the two men mentioned in the answer who died after
1945 are not those ericjonphelps-ga is trying to find.

Matthias Ehrenfried (1871-1948) according to this German language biography
http://www.bistum-wuerzburg.de/bwo/opencms/bistum/persoenlichkeiten/vergangenheit/ehrenfried.html
was not "a key figure in Himmler's SS and died in a cell at Nuremburg".

Michael Rackl, too, according to this German language webpage
http://www.bistum-eichstaett.de/geschichte/
was not "a key figure in Himmler's SS and died in a cell at Nuremburg".

Tutuzdad did certainly list all the dioceses within the Archdiocese of Bamberg.
However, Hochhuth was not using the German word "Bischof", but
"Weihbischof". Therefore, the person in question could not have been
Bishop of Eichstätt, Speyer or Würzburg.

According to the script of a German radio broadcast (Südwestrundfunk,
2003) Hochhuth's words were:
"Höss, der Kommandant, hat Priester werden sollen, und Himmlers
Patenonkel -Weihbischof in Bamberg".
The radio script is available in rtf-format (you can view it as HTML):

However, I do not know if this is an exact quote from Hochhuth's book.

Furthermore, it is not entirely clear if Himmler's godfather actually
was a Weihbischof. The phrase as quoted does not reveal, in my view,
the exact meaning of "... hat ... werden sollen ...".

In my previous comment I wanted to write:
"... that none of the two men mentioned ... is the one"
and not:
"... that the two men mentioned ... are not those"
