Hello Raw76,
Below you will find all the information that I was able to unearth
regarding the development of the "MGM Grand? LAS VEGAS.
MGM Grand,
3799 Las Vegas Blvd. S
?On November 30, 1990, the Marina Hotel and Casino was closed and on
October 7, 1991, groundbreaking occurred for the new MGM Grand. The
MGM Grand opened in December 1993 with 5034 rooms and suites, making
it the largest hotel in the world. The former Tropicana Golf Course
was transformed into an outdoor seasonal amusement park with a number
of theaters and rides, including the free-fall Skyscreamer and a
roller coaster. The MGM complex now includes a 380,000 square foot
conference center. In 1999, the former Leo Lion entrance building at
the Strip and Tropicana was replaced with the present gold statue of
Leo. A pedestrian overpass system at the busy Strip/Tropicana Avenue
intersection now links the Tropicana, MGM Grand, New York New York and
Excalibur Hotel & Casinos. The MGM Grand was designed by Veldon
Simpson; Martin Stern, Jr. and stands at an impressive 30 stories
high. Rather than imploding a viable structure, the MGM incorporated
the original structure of the Marina Hotel.?

city-wide transit system. The MGM/Grand-Bally's project is the first
joint venture between competing hotels/casinos and is known as the MGM
Grand-Bally's Monorail Limited Liability Company (The Monorail
Company). This project sets a new benchmark in visionary thinking for
Las Vegas since the concept goes far beyond merely an internal
circulation system. This presentation focuses more on the project
strategic concept rather than technical features of the monorail
system. Monorails of this type have been in operation at Disneyworld
and Disneyland as well as in Japan for many years and, therefore,
their features have been already sufficiently described. The paper
does include a table that gives the technical specifications of the
Las Vegas monorail including capacity, weight, beam length, propulsion
type and power, speed, breaking type, system power, doors per train
and train width/length.?

TransSolutions
?VSL together with Gensler and Associates Architects contracted with
MGM Grand/Bally's Monorail Corporation to design and build a monorail
system to provide direct access between the MGM Grand and Bally's
hotels. The two-train shuttle rail system has two platform stations,
each containing two load/unload areas for the trains. TransSolutions
was contracted to assist the Monorail Corporation in evaluating the
performance of the monorail design prior to construction.?

FINANCING
?These driverless urban transit systems are expensive to build, and
taxpayers usually do not want to raise their taxes to build them. To
overcome this problem Las Vegas resorts, led by Park Place
Entertainment and MGM Mirage are raising finance without using any tax
money of any kind, now or ever. To accomplish this, the sponsoring
resorts are investing a total of $30 million in capital to this
project, and the Las Vegas Monorail Team, led by Bombardier and
Granite Construction, are investing an additional $18.5 million, for a
total private sector cash investment of $48.5 million. The rest of the
required capital will be financed by tax-exempt non-recourse revenue
bonds tied to farebox and advertising revenue.?
