Dancers and non-dancers alike look forward each year to the fabulous
Championship Ballroom Dancing program on PBS (a broadcast of a portion
of the famed Ohio Star Ball). In fact, many of us were introduced to
ballroom dancing and started to take dance lessons after chancing upon
this program and being enchanted by the beautiful dancing it
showcased. Therefore, it truly shocked and saddened us to hear that
we will not be seeing new programs of Championship Ballroom Dancing
beginning this year. The Ohio Star Ball, upon which the program is
based, endures and continues to grow in scope and reputation, but
financial shortfalls caused cancellation of the taping and airing of
the broadcast.
What a shame when television is rife with mindless situation comedies
and inane "reality shows" that an elegant and cultured event like
Championship Ballroom Dancing is taken off the air. According to Sam
Sodano, the organizer of the Ohio Star Ball, it costs about $400,000
to tape and air the one-hour program. He has been active in talking
to networks about future programs, but he needs the support of the
dance community to bolster his case.
Some dancers in Albany, New York have gotten together to start an
e-mail petition to get Championship Ballroom Dancing back on
television. Would you lend your support to our effort? Just click on
the link below and "sign" the on-line petition with your name and
e-mail address. Also, please forward this link to all your dancing
friends. The petition will be forwarded automatically to Sam Sodano,
the Ohio Star Ball organizers and the Public Broadcasting System. If
we can show how important this show is to America's dance community,
we can help promote this and other quality dance programming in the
future. Please take a minute to add your support.

There are people opposed to ballroom dancing. The PBS program
Championship Ballroom Dancing was taken off the air. As to why, your
guess is as good as mine. It seems likely that it was not people who
were enthusiastic about dancing who made the decision to remove it.
One might suppose that people who were indifferent to dance could have
removed it. But it had very high ratings, and no one is indifferent to
high ratings. |
