I just started an online college course. I'm on vacation while
moving, however, so my only computer is a Sharp Zaurus, a pocket-PC
like machine that runs Linux.

I need to use courseware that only runs on Windows. The only solution
I see is to purchase a shell account that allows me to install
software, and connect with rdesktop.

The tricky part is finding a windows shell provider. There's plenty
of shell providers out there, but all that I can find run BSD,
Solaris, or Linux. Can anybody find me a shell provider that runs
Windows?

You could rent a laptop or spend time at a library or install Wine or
buy an emachine. If you could get a *nix shell provider, you could
possibly run Wine and use an X server to run the app. Possibly.

This is a free comment.

The problem with libraries, emachines, and laptops is that I'm moving,
and on vacation until I get there--I'll be at different places, and
with limited space in my luggage. I wouldn't be able to return a
laptop in Florida after renting it in Seattle.

A regular Unix shell provider that'll let me install it using Wine is
the best idea of that bunch, but getting a program no Wine developer
has ever heard of ("Simnet") to run is an iffy proposition at
best--plus it requires WMP 7.1 or above, which rates 2 out of 5
compatibility stars.

It's a testament to security (or lack thereof) ... you *might* be able
to colocate a PC at an ISP, or a friend's house, and use something
like gotomypc... :)

Thanks--It looks like that's the closest I'll be able to get to what I
need. The cheapest way to do it looks like about $70 a month for a
low-end dedicated server at a discount webhost on page 30 of the
google results. They allow terminal services access, so I can
rdesktop over. Too bad it's 10x as expensive as a unix shell account,
but so it goes, I suppose.
