Question ID: 45560
I am having a problem connecting to my remotely hosted website with
*any* FTP client software, on a system running Windows XP. For the
record:

1. The software is configured for PASV (passive) mode, so as not to
get tripped up by the XP firewall;

2. The problem does not appear to be with the software or
configuration of the
software - WS_FTP LE, configured in exactly the same manner,
successfully connects from Windows 2000.

3. The problem is not with the remote webhost - I can connect to the
webhost and successfully transfer files, using different systems
(including Fetch on a Mac, which works flawlessly).

4. The software appears to connect then immediately disconnect from
the remote host, then issuing a "connection failed" error.

5. The account name, user name, and password are correct. Double,
triple, and quadruple checked. And then re-verified.

6. I hate XP and strongly recommend that everybody here buy Macs, but
I recognize that the underlying problem may nonetheless be with the
user. ;-)

I need to know what the problem is and how to fix it. Ask for all the
clarification you need.

Can you cut-n-paste the log when you attempt the connection? That'll
be most helpful...

I don't think it will be helpful:

Connected to 208.xx.181.xxx port 21
! Connection failed example.com

When I tried secret901-ga's suggestion, as outlined below:

ftp> open example.com
Connected to example.com.
Connection closed by remote host.
ftp>

Following tomh-ga's suggestion of shutting off the XP firewall
allowed me to connect. So if he is a researcher he can now claim his
prize.

If not, and another researcher wishes to follow up with how to
reconfigure the XP firewall so as to allow it to be enabled while not
causing this problem, that question remains open.

The problem with your connection to the server may stem from Windows
XP's refusal to respond to PING requests that the FTP server sends to
your computer to make sure that your computer exists. Instead of
disabling the Internet Connection Firewall (ICF), you can configure it
to accept PING requests instead:
1. Right click on the connection where the ICF is enabled
2. Choose properties
3. Choose the advanced tab
4. Click settings
5. Choose the ICMP tab
6. Check "Allow incoming echo request"

That's a good thought. Unfortunately it didn't work. (And, "just in
case", I enabled all features under ICMP, figuring that if that worked
I could then work backwards to figure out which feature was at the
root of the problem. I also disconnected and reconnected to be sure
that the changes took effect. Still no luck - so it seems safe at this
juncture to rule out the ICMP settings.)

Windows XP has a Remote Help feature that enables other users with
Windows XP to remotely connect to your computer to see what's wrong.
This feature can be enabled and you can send someone you know with an
invitation to access your computer. It is relatively safe, since you
can drop the connection any time, and you can see exactly what the
remotely connected user is doing. If you'd like, you can let me
access your computer. secret901@yahoo.com

I would prefer to try to resolve this without allowing third parties
to access my computer.

Window Xp is not really good, I also have one, I have a problem with
using the clean sweep of window xp, because xp is too sensitive, all
the system wiped out . If you will make any delete action it will
automatically destroy your system even if you donot like it and the
computer did not state the harmful effect. You also need to update
the windows everytime so as to be sure that the xp will not have
problem ( maybe ) in the future. This gives me a lot of trouble since
i purchase this window.

Try using XP's own FTP client. Start->Run then type ftp, when the
console pops up, type connect followed by your addressthen press
enter. The remote server should then ask for a username and password.
See if you can connect that way.

Are you running Home or Professional XP?

As much as the only answer you'll ever get is "uninstall, reinstall"
from tech support, try anyway, if it's a common problem, they might
know some real information. Too bad it's hell navigating that site.

The built-in Windows firewall isn't worth much, so unless otherwise
specified, don't try to outsmart it. Disable it and try to connect, I
assume you aren't running any other sort of internet protection
software.

Try to connect using IE6, it may be useless for any real FTP needs,
but it gives good error messages (if such a thing exists) and it is
obviously configured to work with the OS it is based on.

Macs are good, but it's hard finding good FTP software for OSX.

The lack of software for OSX probably has something to do with
Microsoft's monopoly on the OS market. (A stab in the dark. ;-)

I am running XP Pro.

You overstate the value of customer service. I received a link to a
wonderful FAQ on how to connect to the Internet. I wonder if they
realize that telling you to check to see if your modem is properly
connected is perhaps not the most useful advice to include in an
online document.

Ok well here are some ideas and i bet that one will fix it. one make
sure your client software is XP/32 bit made.. Another is to go the
client's software site and check to see what Winsocks it uses and may
need a 3rd party... Far as windows firewall, its a sick excuse of
software firewall and free zone alarm kicks it butt.. So look into
just stopping the firewall service, and get a hardware
router/firewall.. Also can another computer connect from the same
network? I mean if u run broadband, can another computer in the house
connect????

P.S. This may sound silly but some servers just do not like Window's
ways of connecting.. Micro$haft's ways in HTTP and FTP are VERY
different than standard Unix..

Hope this helps..

I agree with computermaster...

Drop the Windows firewall, and install ZoneAlarm,
free, at:
