Hello -
Thank you for your question. If you need any additional
clarification, please don't hesitate to ask.
I spoke to five different trucking carriers, which I document below.
The estimated average price per loaded mile between Michigan and
Ontario (around 250 - 300 miles) will be somewhere between $3.00 and
$3.10. However, there are a few variables that can alter the price,
and one of them is miles.
Most carriers said that "per loaded mile" is the most popular rate
quote format, followed by a flat rate quote. You will encounter "per
hundred weight" (pounds) in Canada.
There may be additional costs for cleaning, fuel, and/or insurance.
US Dept. of Energy fuel index is a determining factor for the fuel
surcharge, which is normally around 9-11%. Cleaning will range from
$125 to $200+, depending on the liquid. Insurance can also be an
additional cost.

Do you have any additional info or can you obtain information
regarding how carriers charge their clients for border crossing fees
from USA to Canada, including bridge tolls, security delay fees and/or
customs fees.

Also, just to be 100% clear, the companies that charge for the loaded
mile do not charge a flat rate along with that? Also, do the charges
vary when dealing with shorter distances...say 80-100 miles? Does the
format vary when you have such shorter distances (i.e. when 80-100
there is a flat rate and a loaded mile rate together)? I'm thinking,
with this distance, the loading times may be greater than the actual
driving time.
Finally, how much do these companies charge for demurrage after
allowing for a certain number of free hours for loading and unloading?
If you can get me all these answers, I will throw in a $50 tip.

I will look further into this for you. I'll need 24-48 hours.
For clarification on that one point: it's either flat rate OR per
loaded mile. It's negotiated up front.

I contacted Trimac, Quality, and Bulk Chemical to get the additional
information. They all gave me pretty much the same answers.
1) How do you charge for border crossing fees from the USA to Canada,
including bridge tolls, security delay fees and/or customs fees.
Whatever is incurred is passed on to the client in some way. The
actual format of the billing depends upon how the customer wants it.
The extra charges will typically be itemized on a bill. For example,
border charge is around $52-$55.
2) Do the charges vary when dealing with shorter distances...say
80-100 miles? Does the format vary when you have such shorter
distances (i.e. when 80-100 there is a flat rate and a loaded mile
rate together)?
Definitely more expensive. You'll be dealing more with a minimum
charge of $400-$450, so divided over that smaller quantity of X miles,
it's much more expensive. The format can switch from dollars per
loaded mile to dollars per hour, but again, it's how the client wants
to see it invoiced.
3) How much do you charge for demurrage after allowing for a certain
number of free hours for loading and unloading?
$55-$76 per hour.
Let me know if you need any clarification.
