My school's website now only supports Internet Explorer 5.5 SP2 or IE
6.0 SP2 in order to access my grades, classes, etc. I have Windows Me
with IE 6.0 SP1. I have performed all updates possible for SP1 (and I
still can't sign in )but don't know how to get SP2. I think I found
some info saying that you can't upgrade to SP2 if you have Windows Me.
Is this true? Is there a way around this? Surely there is SOME way I
can access my school's website without having to upgrade my OS. I'm
looking for a fix that won't cost me a bunch of money.

I'm getting an error saying "user name and password don't match" but I
have checked with the school's computer office and they confirmed I'm
using the correct username and password. They said the problem is
with my browser.

Info you might need: The website is www.usi.edu and the link to what I
need is at the bottom right corner "my usi". The updates I have done
on IE 6.0 are: 324929, 330994, 810847, 813951, 818529, 822925, 828750,
824145, 832894, 837009, 831167, 823353, 867801, 833989, 834707,
889293. The version I have is 6.0.2800.1106

Please be specific in your answer. I'm obviously not a computer genius. : )

You might try to change your browser. I have never heard of a issue
such as this. Have you tried accessing your account from one of there
computers. I know a while back I had to run some same testing software
and it was on there end and not mine. Even though they swear that it
was on my end. There software was a joke.

Hello,

The problem is that you need IE 6.0 service pack 2 as explained at
http://www.usieagles.org/site/loginhelp.html

None of the other patches will not help you since the issue is related
with an encryption algorithm that comes with SP2.

If you need SP2 full download version, I can provide.

1. download firefox at http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/
2. install the useragent switcher at
https://addons.update.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?id=59&vid=617
3. restart firefox
4. use the Tools menu, select the user agent switcher menu and set it
to "Internet Explorer 6 (Windows XP)"
5. try your site

As far as I know there is no SP2 for IE 6.0 on Windows Me, there is
SP2 for Windows XP (IE6 is part of Windows XP so the service pack
includes a super-patch for IE). You can mail to your university to
clarify that confusion. Anyway I know they won't fix it soon, so you
can do the trick that catchwa said, but he didn't explain completely:

1. Download Firefox (www.getfirefox.com), it's like 4-5 MB and just
run the installer. Firefox is a great web browser, very secure and
faster than IE, I use Firefox for everything in Windows and Linux, so
you can :)

2. Once Firefox is installed, go to
http://www.chrispederick.com/work/firefox/useragentswitcher/download/
and click "User Agent Switcher for Firefox/Mozilla", you are going to
install a "user agent switcher". The "user agent" is a text string
that identifies your browser, with this add-on you can change your
identification, it's like falsifying an ID, but this is legal, don't
worry.

3. After a few seconds there is going to appear a small warning in the
top of the webpage in a yellow square, it says "To protect your
computer, Firefox prevented this site from installing software on your
computer" (see? Firefox watch your back!), click in "Edit options...",
click in Allow and OK, now www.chrispederick.com is allowed to install
software.

4. Click again in "User Agent Switcher for Firefox/Mozilla" and there
should be appear a small window to install the add-on, if you get the
"Save" dialog, close it and try again. Once you have the window with
the "Install now" button, well, click on "Install now" and install it.

5. Close Firefox and start it again.

6. Click in Tools > User Agent Switcher > Options... > Options. Select
"User agents" and click Add. Now enter the following data (use
copy-paste or type carefully, you can change the description if you
want):

Description: Netscape 7.1 (Windows)
User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.4)
Gecko/20030624 Netscape/7.1 (ax)
App Name: Netscape
App Version: 5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.4)
Platform: Win32

(don't worry for Vendor and Vendor Sub and click OK, OK).

7. In Firefox select the menu Tools > User Agent Switcher and choose
"Netscape 7.1 (Windows)", you are now changing your user agent.

8. That site uses pop-ups (what annoying site!) and Firefox blocks the
pop-ups for you, so you have to allow an exception. Go to the menu
Tools > Options > Web Features, in "Block Popup Windows" click
"Allowed Sites". In "Address of web site" write usieagles.org, click
Allow, OK and OK.

9. Go to My USI, check your scores.

10. Laugh at them and spread the voice about Firefox!

Extra tip:
If some things don't work add another agent, with this user agent you
are going to disguise your browser as IE6 - Windows XP Service Pack 2:

Description: Internet Explorer 6 (Windows XP SP2)
User Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1)
App Name: Microsoft Internet Explorer
App Version: 4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1)
Platform: Win32

Extra-extra tip:
You can return your user agent to the default using Tools > User Agent
Switcher > Default or just restart Firefox.
