I will pay a $50 tip for this answer in the next 2 hours (it is 10 EST
right now, on Thursday). Or I will pay a $20 tip for the answer
today. I recommend calling/visiting a BMW dealer and just asking the
service department. I just don't have the time today.

Hi rafdog,

30 minutes to spare!

I hope _your_ codes are in the link below... I called the local BMW
Dealer as you suggested. The Service Manager said the Service (Fault)
Codes are extremely general, and don't necessarily correspond with the
actual work that has been, or will be performed. He said the only
real way to tell is to take your BMW into a dealer and have them hook
up to the on-board computer and get a printout. Undaunted, I
regrouped and looked for "Fault Codes" as he called them.

Link to a .TIF file with the fault codes for M44, M52, M62, and M73 engines.
http://ackthud.com/shawnfogg/faultcodes.htm
This 23 page tif file is a list of the fault codes for a BMW. If you
are using a R5-FCX to grab the faults it displays the HEX fault code.
Cross reference the fault code with the correct engine in your car to
get more info about the fault.

Note: The pages are hard to read.

Also note this linked page:
http://ackthud.com/shawnfogg/checkengine.htm
..."Tired of being at the mercy of your local BMW dealership to tell
you the cause of the 'Check Engine' light? ..... The R5-FCX is
extremely portable, simple to use, and reads the actual BMW fault
codes..."

Here's where you can purchase a Fault Code Reader for $139.95:

Peake Research Fault Code Reader (most BMWs up to 2000)
http://www.turnermotorsport.com/html/detail.asp?PRODUCT_ID=FCX
Part #: FCX
Applications: 1986 - 2000 all (all)
BMW owners should have a great interest in this tool. The BMW's
Check-Engine light can mean any number of things. Sometimes it's
alerting you to the real need for a repair, but very often it is
merely indicating one of the many, simple (top off your coolant) type
problems. Also resets Service and Oil Change indicator dashboard
lights. Easy to use and includes a booklet containing the fault code
chart and instructions for use.

Will not work on the following vehicles: E30M3, 2000 750iL.

Have a 2001 or later car? You need the FCX II, just click here! [at the above link]

If this is acceptable, please tell me so I can post in the Answer box...

Cynthia-
Close. I still hope to have a vague understanding of each of these
codes listed in the orginal question. For example, I know that among
them are replacement wipers, a new bumper, oil changes and
inspections. I just don't know which one is which, nor if there are
other details I am missing. I am buying a car with this service
record tomorrow.

I didn't find any of them in the answer provided, though it looked
like good information for diagnosing future problems.

If you can contact a dealer or some other way to get the answer. I
will leave the $50 bounty on the table for another two hours.

6166024800 = Windscreen washers leaking
6131011500 = Indicator light switch malfunction

85990092mp = Inspection I performed
6321051200 = Rear tail light bulb replaced

most likely replaced thsi link)
34117777mp = 3411- is for the front brakes systems but there is no
defect code for 77-77? Since this code says mp at the end, then it
could be a brake fluid flush or a pad replacement?
6321061200 = rear brake light bulb replaced
0017090100 = codes beginning with 00 are not in the KSD
5131000700 = Cracked windscreen
3441073900 = Parking brake cable making noise, another common issue,
that makes a squeaking sound , they replace the rubber grommit for the
cable to eliminate the nosie.

I need the series, model, and year. The last 5 digits don't tell me that.

12th - 17th Character: The 12th through the 17th character in your
BMW's VIN indicate the sequence of the vehicle for production as it
rolled off the manufacturer's assembly line. The last four characters
are always numeric.

Very very close, waiting for a phone call.

I don't think this will help *today* unless you have a very fast
connection, and I don't know if they deliver online, but you can
purchase the "BMW KSD 2003/10" CD here for $50.00

Scroll to BMW
http://www.autocd.com/AutoCdeng.html
All the codes are on this CD.

Hi rafdog,

My friend called me back to give me the exact specifics of the last 3
codes. He said the first 2 digits are always the area on the car that
were serviced:

5116427800 - (No 51-16-42) 51-16s are interior trim issues, like the
mirror, ash tray, etc.

1390019900 - Fuel tank vent valve error, fault in memory.

1778021500 - (No 17-78) 17s are cooling system issues.

I'm glad I was able to become creative and track down the information
for you. You are very kind, --Thanks so much for the 5 stars, the
kind words, and the KILLER TIP!!!
