As you probably know, lead acid is relatively undemanding on the
charge regime. Only problem is low power 36 volt chargers are a bit
rare. I wondered about model boats and things but couldn?t find
anything good -- usually NiCad anyway. However, the search :-

"36 volt battery charger" "lead acid"

threw up :-

Don?t think you?ll like the prices though. Lots of other hits, so you
might like to search through them.

Is the old charger definitely beyond redemption? What has died in it?
Perhaps I or another can advise on repair.

as I forgot to mention in my question............. The "adapter"
part that you plug into the battery is not a 3 prong adapter. Its a
one prong. similar to that of an RCA jack. and We did find
several chargers that are identical to the one were looking for ,
however they are 3 prong. If we use a charger that is an identical
match just different end piece., Can we just take the original one
pronge end piece and cut/splice it to the new charger unit
?????????????? we found several with the exact
specifications--even looked like an exact match. just different
pieces/adapters.

Oh that?s a bit easier. Yea indeed, your suggestion should work fine.
It?s very unlikely that there is ?clever? stuff interposed between the
power-in connector and the battery other than perhaps a fuse. But if
you wanted to be absolutely sure, you could trace the wiring or buzz
it out (with battery disconnected). It?s just possible that there is a
rectifier in series to prevent reverse polarity charging and to
obviate accidental short circuits on the connector. Even so though, it
wouldn?t change the outside world.

Can you describe the connector in more detail? There?s nothing wrong
with splicing but a new connector would do a neater job if the
original is not removable. Most likely it is a standard low voltage
power connector similar or identical to ones on printers etc. There
are several different sizes and lengths but most are readily available
from electronic stores. Not a 3.5mm (or 2.5 etc) jack like headphones?
Sometimes they are used for power and again are readily available.

If you elect just to splice, neatest way is after soldering use heat
shrink sleeving. Or if you just want a quick and dirty, snaplocks
(scotchlocks) or whatever they are called in your corner of the
universe. The blue or red plastic, insulation displacement things so
beloved of auto audio engineers. All you need is a set of pliers to
put them on but best to wrap in tape to prevent the wires fraying.

Obviously you must get the polarity correct. You may have all the data
from manuals etc, or even markings on the connector plate, but as with
any charger the positive outlet from the charger must connect to the
positive of the battery (and neg to neg of course).

Sorry if any of this is a bit simplistic but I don?t know your level
of technical experience. If there are still things which this comment
doesn?t address, just post further and I or another will be pleased to
help.

Guess this bike is for a child of yours? Good one.

My bike has input voltage 115/230VAC @60/50Hz 3/1.5A Output 36V
DC/2A. The power lead is a coaxial male connector, similar to RCA
male.
This is for a Chinese (I think) built electric bike that sells under
the name Powabyke in the UK. Any good??
