Question ID: 456971
I recently rebuilt (a clean install) my Dell Inspiron 660m with
Windows XP SP2. It has an ATI Radeon 9000 Mobility video card. For
some reason, when I try to view a folder that contains more than six
or so icons, explorer.exe crashes on module gdiplus.dll. Furthermore,
if I try to browse the folder via Internet Explorer, it also crashes
iexplorer.exe on module gdiplus.dll (the full error log for both from
event viewer is below).

I have all the latest Windows patches, DirectX 9.0c, and the latest
drivers from ATI.

I've researched this problem on Google and Google Groups, and the
answer seems to be to reinstall Windows. However, I want to be able to
resolve this issue without reinstalling. Please feel free to ask me
any questions. I tried to be as detailed as possible.

Hi tjahjono-ga,

Can you go to the Office Update site at:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/officeupdate/default.aspx and click
the button that says, "Check for updates". Install any/all updates you
find. Did that fix the problem?

Yes, I've checked the Office Update site, and there was nothing there.
I have all the latest Office updates. I am running Office 2003 SP1.

I have also checked for viruses and spyware.

For a hoot, can you try to perform a 'repair' of the Office
installation? It's pretty easy, just make sure you put the original CD
into the CD drive and go to "Help | Detect and Repair...". It will
reinstall any messed up files. Of course, running a chkdsk on the
computer may be a good idea too.

Let me know if the above suggestions work.

Tried that. Still no luck :(

I also tried installing the GDI+ Security Update from Microsoft.

The only other thing I can think of is...

1) Run a ScanDisk on your machine
2) Download, install and run Microsoft's Beta Anti-Spyware software (
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=321cd7a2-6a57-4c57-a8bd-dbf62eda9671&displaylang=en
)
3) Download, install and run (if you don't already have an Anti-virus
program installed and updated) Grisoft's AVG Anti-Virus at (
http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/ )

If that doesn't help, I can't think off hand of any other solutions... Sorry.. :(

GDIPLUS.DLL
===========
The gdiplus.dll library is required for windows to operate. It is used
by windows when communicating with your video card in order to disaply
graphics on screen. If gdiplus.dll is unavailable, windows will not
function correctly. It also contains libraries for the GDI graphics
interface.

3. Lower Hardware Accelation in Troubleshoot TAB in Advanced Video Card properties.
*Test

4. Change File View type in Explorer

The version of GDIplus.dll in the SDK is older than the one that comes
with Office 2003.

No viruses or spyware on the system, either.
