Question ID: 457699
I have two computers: An Apple PowerBook G4 and a Windows XP box. I
would like to control the PowerBook remotely with my Windows computer.
(I know the opposite is possible -- I can download the Remote Desktop
Client for Macs to control my Windows box, but I'm looking for the
other way around.)

How is this possible? Or is it?

Hi there, I'm just checking in to see if you were able to get VNC
up-and-running and to find out if it's been useful.

Thanks, I'm very glad it worked out for you.

I'm going to copy my comment from below into here:

-----

There is a free piece of software known as VNC that allows a remote
computer running a VNC "client" to see the screen of and manipulate a
computer running the VNC "server".

It's free and easy to use, once it's set up. But, I can't vouch for
the simplicity of setting up the server on a Mac.

Assuming you have Mac OS/X, you can download the server from:
    http://sourceforge.net/projects/osxvnc/
(Scroll down and click "Download")

Then, on your Windows box, you can download the VNC client from:
    http://www.realvnc.com/download-free.html

This should have the functionality you're looking for.

I'm posting this as a comment and not as an answer, because I don't
have firsthand experience using it and this solution is not officially
"vouched for" by the main body producing it.

Sorry, what I meant is that the Max OS/X version isn't official --
it's been "ported" by a group of developers working independently.
I've used VNC on Windows boxes many times over the years, and it's
been very helpful.

Apple has recently installed VNC server as an option in the Apple
Remote Desktop Client 2.1.
This software can be freely downloaded from Apple's support web-site.
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/appleremotedesktop21client.html
It installs in the Systems Preferenes Panel under Sharing. Quite
easy to use and well supported. OSXvnc works well also but requires a
bit more in setup. You would stil need the VNC client for your
Windows box. You'll then be up and running.

Strange, I have not been able to view my Macintosh (using Remote
Desktop) from a PC (using a VNC Viewer). Here's what I do:

1) On the Mac, System Preferences -> Sharing, check Apple Remote Desktop
2) Click on Access Privileges, then check everything (including "VNC
viewers may control screen with password")

3) On the PC, use your favorite VNC viewer (I prefer UltraVNC) and
connect to the Mac

The screen on the VNC Viewer has gibberish on little more than 30
pixels, and then blank for the rest of the screen. Moving the mouse
on the PC does show up on the Mac (i.e., controlling the Mac seems to
work but you can't see anything!)

Has anyone else experienced this? If so, are there any solutions
(besides getting and installing OSX VNC)?

Thanks.

I've got Mac OS X 10.3 with Apple Remote Desktop Client installed and
enabled. It listens at 3283, as netstat says:

udp4 0 0 *.net-assistant *.*

Then, I am trying to connect to this mac using RealVNC server for
Windows. It says that remote system has closed the connection.

Firewall is disabled, and I can connect to this mac using, e.g., ssh

I've figured out the settings you need to use to use a Windows VNC
Client (RealVNC 4.0 in this case) when connecting to an Apple Remote
Desktop machine with VNC authentication enabled.

Under options :
-UN-check "Auto Select"
-Choose either Hextile or Raw as your "Preferred Encoding" -- ARD
doesn't seem to like ZRLE
-Choose Full (All available colours)

It's slow, but this way you'd be able to connect and use as intended
rather then having the connection dump.

Hi,

I am running Mac OS 10.4.1 with Apple Remote Desktop 2.2, and
configured it to allow VNC clients. I am using RealVNC 4.0 (and I
tried 4.1 as well) on a Windows XP box, and get the error "No matching
security types."

Has anyone else experienced this error? Every Windows VNC client I try
seems to give an error like this, or complains about versions.

Thanks,
Chris
