Incorporated in 1920 and with just over 5,000 residents today,
Riverdale Park is a small town in the suburbs of Washington, DC.
Nestled between College Park, Hyattsville, and Edmonston, the town
derived its name from the historic plantation owned by descendents of
Maryland's first family.

Riverdale Park's Cherry Hill Cemetery, one of the few remnants of
black slave life in the county, is believed to hold the graves of 12
slaves.
In the 1890's, the first residences built by the Riverdale Park Co.
were in the area around the B&O train station.

Cherry Hill Cemetery
"Cherry Hill Cemetery [PG69-21]
6821 Ingraham Street, Beacon Heights
Cherry Hill Cemetery was established by the will of Josiah Adams as a
family cemetery in 1884. It contains his remains and those of
approximately fifty of his relatives. A unique aspect of the cemetery
are "homemade", or, "vernacular" grave markers.
Joshua Adams, a free black before emancipation, worked as a gardener
at the Riversdale Mansion of Charles B. Calvert in the mid-19th
century. Adams eventually acquired his own family farm specializing in
fruits and vegetables from three small parcels of farmland that he
purchased from 1871-1883. It was a rural family farm cemetery until
1955 when the farm of Josiah Adams was divided and sold for
development. In 1988, the vacant parcel of land was sold by the Prince
George's County Government for non-payment of taxes. Eventually, the
property was conveyed to MarylandNational Capital Park and Planning
Commission. Its History Division, Archaeology and Black History
Programs are in the process of restoring the cemetery to its 19th
century appearance. "
