Recently connected (online) with a strictly platonic friend. Yet to meet in person. She has invited me join her at a play at a theatre where she holds prepaid season tkts. valued at about $50/each. It's a gracious offer and want to go. I would rather pay for my tkt., then I won't be obligated to take her to dinner. It's not the money at all, it's just that I'm an introvert and this is too much for me on a first date with a complete stranger. If I pay for my tkt. we can do coffee and/or dessert afterward for about 1/2 hr. to keep it simple. My usual 1st date would be a movie and coffee afterward. I like to keep the 1st date low key with a 1/2 hr. of face time. Will I be totally blowing the rules of etiquette by offering to pay for my tkt? |

Unless she has hinted in some way that she expects you to pay for the ticket, I think it's best to thank your friend for her generosity and enjoy the evening at the theatre. If I were in your friend's position, I would feel a little bit hurt if my companion offered money in these circumstances. If taking your friend to dinner is an emotionally daunting proposition, perhaps you could have a brief coffee date before the show starts. By choosing a time before the show, you can control the duration of the engagement, since you'll need to leave the restaurant in time to be seated at the theatre. |
