I am not an expert for television technology, but there might be a
certain possibility that this TV set has simply reached the end of its
life span. It is 14 years old; no one should be surprised if a TV set
of that age is broken beyond repair. At least, beyond repair for a
reasonable amount of money, considering how old the set is.

One does not wish to proclaim expertise.......... however, anything to
avoid landfill. Can you clarify a little. By ?fuzzy?, do you mean the
picture is always out of focus and small detail is blurred. If this be
so, check out my comment :-

I should however re-stress that, unless you have a good practical
approach, it is unwise to open up a TV.

The ?static sound on some channels only?. You mean there is crackling
noise on the sound? How often does this happen? Is the TV connected
directly to an aerial (antenna)? If so, and definitely only on some
channels, it is likely to be interference from a household appliance
or nearby motor. Unless something in the vicinity is producing really
excess interference, the problem is likely to be your aerial system.
Either the aerial itself or the cable, though it is worth checking
that the aerial connector into the back of the set is OK. The reason
for only some channels being affected is because they generally have
different strengths so the weaker ones are more susceptible to picking
up interference. Sometimes aerial realignment can cure.

Can you confirm your aerial system though?
