Question ID: 458193
I am a college freshman, and will be 20 years old by this summer. My
intended major is Middle Eastern Studies. Could you please supply me
with internship opportunities with a focus on the Middle East for
summer 2005? I am interested in government and journalism
specifically, although I am open to any Middle Eastern focused
internship. I do not speak Arabic. The deadline for applications
should not have already passed. I am from New York City, so working
there would be my first choice, but I would also be interested in
working anywhere else in the country (like Washington DC) or oversees
in a Middle Eastern Country. The job may be paid or non-paid.

Hi theomay,

I am working on your question and want to make sure I get programs
that interest you. Some of the internships have an Arab slant, others
a Jewish/Israeli slant. Do you prefer either one? cath-ga

P.S. Can you tell me what school you are currently attending, and
what gender you are? cath-ga

Dear theomay1-ga,

thanks very much for your question! The good news is that you
inquiring in time to make most deadlines for the summer intern
sessions. The less good news is that most of the programs are in
Washington, DC, and some programs require you to be an upper division
or graduate student. I have come up with several programs for which I
believe you are eligible.

1) In line with your interest in journalism, the Middle East Research
and Information Project offers a summer internship in Washington, DC
with these responsibilities:

"Responsibilities may include: assisting the editor in producing
Middle East Report, assisting the media coordinator in research,
helping to generate content for MERIP?s website, proofreading,
procuring photographs and other graphics, securing reports and
documents, monitoring media coverage of the Middle East and many
others. Specific responsibilities will depend upon the intern?s skills
and interests, and MERIP?s current organizational needs. "
Go to:

http://www.merip.org/misc/internships.html

for details and application information. This program in unpaid, and
the deadline is April 15.

2) The Middle East Institute in Washington, DC offers an unpaid summer
internship working for this non-profit organization. One great perk of
the program is a free language class. The deadline for application is
April 10. Find details and an application at:

http://www.mideasti.org/programs/programs_leadershipdevelopment.html

3) The Middle East Institute of Columbia University offers a summer
internship in Washington, DC through the

American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee Research Institute

"Summer intern program offers a variety of programs for leadership
development; educates students on issues of civil rights, the Arab
heritage, and current events in the Middle East; and empowers them to
educate others. Up to 15 internships are available at the national
office in Washington; the internships are full-time positions and
normally last from June 1 to mid-August; there is a $1250 stipend for
undergraduates and $2000 for graduate students; those who receive
course credit do not receive a stipend. For full details and
application form, see

http://www.adc.org/internprogram/new/

Deadline for applications is March 15.

This organization doesn't REQUIRE you to be Arab-American, but the program is
focused that way. You must also be or become a member of the ADC to do
the internship.

4) If you prefer a program with the Jewish perspective, The Religious
Action Center of Reform Judaism offers a summer internship program in
Washington, DC. While the emphasis in the group is religious, the
organizations that they place you with often are not, such as the
Foundation for Middle East Peace,
and the Center for Middle East Peace and Economic Cooperation. You can
get details about those groups, and an application for the program at:

http://rac.org/confprog/machon/

The deadline for the above is March 1st. This is a work-study program,
and housing at Georgetown University and several meals are included in
the $2600 -$2800 tuition fee.

5) The Washington Institute for Near East Policy has undergraduate summer
research intern positions. The deadline is March 1. (Washington, DC)

http://www.washingtoninstitute.org/junior/

6) The National Council on US-Arab Relations offers internships, at:

http://www.ncusar.org/internship/

7) The Council for the National Interest also has a summer intern program.
It is listed on the Web as a fall internship, but I checked and they are also
offering it in spring and summer. Send a resume and cover letter to
the address listed on this site:

http://www.rsinternships.com/applications/posting.php3?ID=2085

8) There is a current intern job posting at the East West Institute in
New York City. Assuming that they will also need help in the summer,
you could apply for the position described at this site;

http://www.ewi.info/jobs/index.cfm?title=Current%20Openings&l1=About%20EWI&l2=Jobs&l3=&l4=&view=detail&vid=489

9) "FOR" is an Interfaith Peacebuilding organization offering a position called
the Freeman Intern. They provide a living stipend and housing in
Washington, DC. and four weeks paid vacation! Details and application
info at:

http://www.forusa.org/programs/internships/ifpb-internjobdescrip.html

10) The Middle East Peace Network, in California, has a position for a
volunteer/intern, posted at:

The following is a site that lists short term job opportunities in the Middle
East. Some jobs are paid, others volunteer.

Further Resources

The Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington DC
offers undergraduate internships focused on the Middle East, but you
need sophomore standing to apply. Just in case you can hustle up some
extra credits, here's
the URL (or hang on to it for next year)

http://www.csis.org/intern/overview.html

The US Department of State has paid and unpaid summer internships,
at embassies here and abroad. You need 60 semester hours or 90 quarter
hours to qualify, which you probably don't have yet. But if you want to keep
these myriad opportunities in mind for next year, the URL is:

http://www.careers.state.gov/student/prog_intrn.html

The Foreign Policy Association Job board allows you to search paid jobs
and volunteer intern jobs among its members. You can go to this site,
and ask them to e-mail you their weekly job postings:

http://www.fpa.org/jobs_contact2423/jobs_contact.htm

There is a website called paidinterns.com which claims to give you
access to thousands of jobs, for a $24.99 fee. It's at:

http://paidinterns.com/userreg.php

Since you are in New York, you might want to know about Columbia's summer
Arabic Language program. (not an internship.)

http://www.ce.columbia.edu/summer/casp.cfm

If you decide that you must stay in New York this summer, and can't find
an established internship, here's my advice: just go to any organization
doing interesting work related to the Middle East. Propose to them that
you can help them out for free. Who's going to turn down that offer?

I hope this gives you enough options to find something interesting to do this
summer. If you need any clarification or additions please feel free to hit
the "Clarify Answer" button before you rate my work.

Good luck with your education!

Sincerely,
cath-ga
