Question ID: 458567
Where can I find a standalone battery-operated portable TV tuner that
uses an eighth-inch mini-plug output (same connector as most
headphones)? I'm interested in upgrading a portable DVD player (a
Dynex DX-PD510) to be able to watch air-broadcast TV. One product
that is similar to what I'm looking for is called the GoVideo DPT-100.
An eBay auction with a picture is at
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=15055&item=5743816678&rd=1

The only problem with the DPT-100 is that it's proprietary; the
connector only works with GoVideo brand portable DVD players. The
Dynex player that I want the tuner to work with has an 1/8" port
marked "A/V input". The tuner must not require an external power
source (it must run on some type of battery). It doesn't matter
whether the tuner has a remote. I just want to be able to change
channels with it. It must be compact and lightweight, suitable for a
portable system. I'm expecting to be able to velcro or otherwise
attach it to the DVD player in an unobtrusive way. It would also be
ok if the tuner has an output that can be easily adapted to 1/8"
mini-plug format (such as RCA-style outputs). Also, I know that
portable DVD players exist that have TV tuners and antennas built-in,
but I want to use the Dynex player.

I've done some basic searches on eBay, PriceGrabber, and ePinions with
no luck. A friend said that companies used to make little TV tuners
several decades ago that took one or two AA batteries, but that he
hadn't seen them since cable became popular. One purchasable result
is fine, but the more, the merrier.

I don't know whether this will matter, but I'm in the USA, so NTSC is
the video standard.

It's not very shapely and almost as big as the DVD player, but it
satisfies all the requirements, and it's certainly better than what I
could find. Pinkfreud, I'll give you 4 stars if you post that as the
official answer, since it seems that no one else is coming forward
with another solution.
