As found at bitlaw.com

"The duration of copyright protection recently changed as a result of
the Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act of 1998. The easiest rule
to state is that Copyrights have expired on all United States works
registered or published prior to 1923. As a result, all such works
have entered into the public domain. Beyond that, however, it is more
complicated to determine when a copyright will expire."

The above quote only applies to copyright in the US...I don't know if
the author of the quotes and painting at issue was in the US and
whether your work will be published outside the US, which may result
in a different answer.

Additionally, quotes and artwork, even if still subject to copyright
protection, can still be used in another work if they fall into the
"fair use" excpetion.
