i visited the sanmax web page and they offer the driver in the download section: http://www.sanmax.com/products/index.cgi?display=item&part=HD-227-U2 SanMax Product Part No: HD-227-U2 Operating System 98se Description: 2.5in Aluminum Slimline Case USB 2.0 This file should work (in normal and convenience way) with your operating systems (it was developed to work with it). But if you experince some trouble i suggest you to update your OS to Windows XP. "WinXPPro recognized this device without any problem. The main advantage - mobility,if you don't need it, just plug off without any risk." extracted from: http://www3.usenetarchive.org/File.asp?service=31438 I hope it helps. Phossil. |

Hi there, I'm assuming you want to copy your partition/disk image directly to your external hard disk drive through a USB connection with Norton Ghost. You will need Ghost 8.0 or Norton Ghost 2003 and higher. Make sure your external hard drive is not formatted with NTFS but with FAT or FAT32 as you can't write to NTFS from DOS. The Standard Ghost Boot Disk will work with copying to external hard drives. The option "USB Devices" is available only in the Symantec Ghost 8.0 and Norton Ghost 2003 versions of the Ghost Boot Wizard. Now days you can not download a trial version of Norton Ghost, but there is an Enterprise level that you can download for 30day trial by following this link: https://enterprisesecurity.symantec.com/Content/TrialwareForm.cfm?ProductID=3&Promocode=ESTrialware&SSL=YES FEW GOOD LINKS: * Ghost Compatiblity with USB Disks http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ghost.nsf/docid/2000101617144125?Open&src=&docid=2002030414141625&nsf=ghost.nsf&view=docid&dtype=&prod=&ver=&osv=&osv_lvl= * Guide to Norton Ghost http://ghost.radified.com/ If you have problems with connecting your hard drive to your Windows 98se machine, you MAY need a USB drivers upgrade. Hi Phossil, Thanks for taking the time to write. However, it appears you didn;t get the full drift of my question. Norton Ghost works under DOS. TYpically, you would prepare a diskette and boot up with it then use ghost to copy the contents of a hard disk (probably the boot disk) to another location (in this case I wanted to copy my 4 Gb drive in the laptop to the external drive, then put a new 20Gb drive into the laptop and copy the Ghost image back -- so that I have the exact environment I had before but on the 20Gb drive rather than the 4Gb drive.) The problem is that SanMax, even on their site (thanks for the URL), do not have a DOS driver (only Windows drivers) for their external disk. The driver on their site is the same as the one I got on CD with the external case. WHen you open it with Wordpad, they have inserted in the beginiing of the actual driver file a text message saying that it will not work with DOS -- and sure enough, it doesn't. Andre |

If this problem is still unresolved, since there doesnt seem to be a DOS driver for that external HD or whatever.. 1) Get access to a second computer(you said its a laptop? go to a friends house) 2) Connect computers together via a router(It hopefully is set to DHCP to hand out IP's properly) 3) Install ghost there, set up this second computer as the ghost server 4) Upload the ghost image to this second computer, 5) Install the new 20 Gig harddrive in the laptop 6) Download the ghost image to the new Hd, Voila, you just moved your whole OS to a new HD. |
