The National Sporting Goods Association (NSGA) compiles the exact
statistics that you seek. The following data was published in May 2002
and is available on the NSGA's web site [ http://www.nsga.org ]

2001 participation 
Tennis: 10.9 million
Running/Jogging:  24.5 million
Fishing: 44.4 million 
Baseball: 14.9 million
