I'm looking for different organizations that run summer service trips
abroad. I've already done a fair bit of research myself, but thought
I'd give this a shot to see if anybody brings anything up that I have
missed. Some information/criteria for the program:
- I will be 20 years old this summer, and am looking for programs that
would place me in a group of similar aged people, rather than an
individual service project.
- I'm looking for a somewhat lengthy program, not just a week or two.
- I would like to do work in a developing country or one that is very
culturally different, not in a European city, for instance.
- I'd like the program to cost under $3,000, though if the program is
very lengthy, I may be able to go higher.
- I speak English and French, but not Spanish. A program that
requires Spanish language experience would not work.
- I am not a strong swimmer, but am otherwise very physically fit (I
found one program that had a very extensive swimming requirement
because the location was reached by motorized canoe through the
jungle... That would not work.)
- In my research, the program that most closely matches my criteria is
the ProWorld Belize Group summer program.
<<http://www.proworldsc.org/3pb_3programs_group_description.htm>> If
nothing else similar can be found, I will be applying to it. However,
as this will be a significant investment of time and money, I would
prefer if I found another program or two so that I will have a few
options.
If any researchers or commenters have any personal experience with any
of these types of experiences with different groups, I'd love to hear
about that too.
