How many state owned freeway rest areas are in the United States? I
would like to know how many rest areas are in each state and where
they are located in that state. I would also like some kind of link,
reference, etc. to prove the answer is correct.

Hi filmy,

I have located an authoratative website which lists the number of
public rest areas for each state. However, finding the locations of
these rest areas, would entail searching the Department of
Transportation of each state for maps or lists, if and when available.

Here is an example:

Virginia-
http://www.virginiadot.org/comtravel/map-rest-area.asp

However, after searching several DOT websites, I have noted that this
map and/or list is not available for all states.

Please let me know how you would like me to proceed.

Regards,
Rainbow

rainbow,

You're absolutely right. I've already been to DOT New Mexico and DOT
California. So I can attempt to find the exact locations myself. The
web site you stated in your request for clarification would be fine. I
can take it from there.

Thanks so much!

Hi filmy,

Thank you for accepting my findings as an answer to your question.

The following website provides the number of public rest areas for each state:

United States Department of Transportation - Federal Highway Administration
http://safety.fhwa.dot.gov/media/repcong3.htm#table2

For your convenience, you will find links to the Department of
Transportation websites of each state below:

TransData: State DOTs
http://www.transdata.com/dots.htm

Search criteria:
"state owned" highway OR freeway "rest areas"
public highway "rest areas"
public highway "rest areas" "by state"

I hope the information provided is helpful.

Best wishes,
Rainbow

Thanks for the web site link. Unfortunately, not all the states are up
to date but it is a great starting point for me to research further
which is what I needed.
