I don't mean to be mean, but many people play lots of video games. This means they have a big interest in playing (I too enjoy playing...the imaginary audio and visual "rewards" are very appealing). They may not even be good at playing (again, I fall into this category as I play online games and even though I log in tons of hours, there are so many others better than me). Now, if someone writes a lot of *successful* video games, they would be good in that. I imagine that becoming a good writer takes years of practice and experience in writing (not playing). My point is not to discourage your son. In fact, I encourage him to pursue this. My point is just to be skeptical of this first game becoming a blockbuster hit and realize it may take many attempts before succeeding. |

For the most part, you're never going to be able to get a "great game idea" made intoa game by a company you don't work for. In fact, if you send an unsolicited idea to a game company, legally it becomes their intellectual property. As a general rule, don't send in your ideas unsolicited. The best policy is to ask the company if they want to hear your idea first. If you just type it up and send it off, you can pretty much kiss your idea goodbye. Take steps to trademark or copyright your idea and/or see a lawyer first if you are really REALLY serious about making "the next big thing." I could bore you with my story about getting screwed over by Pac Man cereal, but I won't. I'm too bitter to go into detail... To be honest, it's very VERY difficult for someone outside a game company to get their ideas past said company's front door. For that matter, it's not all that easy to get a game company to look at your ideas if you work for them! |
