How about cultures that allow more than one wife? Would they be the most unfaithful? |

I know when I was in Korea, it was an accepted but taboo practice for a man to have his wife (who knew about the mistress) and the Mistress (who knew of the wife) but it wasn't talked about. But very common. In fact as one indigenous person explained, if one had a wife, and a mistress, they were generally well to do, because they provided for both. |

Dear MKHMD- Your question is difficult to answer because cultural and religious norms vary. For example, at the 1996 funeral of French Prime Minister Mitterand, his mistress and thier teen daughter were photographed standing next to his adult sons & wife. No one in France was shocked. As others have pointed out, the majority of human cultures are polygynous (i.e., allow more than one wife. VERY few allow more than one husband). We think of monogamy as 'normal' because it is the prevailing ideal in our culture. If you were to refine your question to: "Among married couples in North America, what does research show about the prevelance of infidelity among different ethnic groups?" you might have better luck. That information would probably require a rather exhaustive search of psychological literature, so you would more likely get an answer if the price were a bit higher. Other questions that you might prefer instead would be "How does one choose a partner who is less likely to be unfaithful?" or "What does research show about differences in interest in casual sex?" I personally believe that infidelity is wrong. I would shy away from generalizing which ethnic group is have a larger population of adulterers/-resses. That's a basis for prejudice or over generalizing people. Families benefit from fidelity. That I think is true. |
