What is the most beneficial practice I can do to help my website pages to rank well in any search engine (e.g. keyword content, descriptions, title tags)? So, otherwise written, what is the most important thing I should focus on if anything? |

The best practice to rank well your pages in Search engines is content. If you have good content many people will link to it and many Search engines and specially google gives more importance to google. Yahoo and MSN are not that difficult to crack and putting some tags in Hx and using the title properly can rank you on top page fairly easily but as google is more of backlink driven it can rank you higher if you have more Anchor text in backlinks with keywords concerned. Now you have a question as what you should focus more on while you would like to rank well in Search engines. I would suggest following these steps has helped me a lot and I am sure it will help you too. 1. Start getting the content for the site. If your site is not much of content based site use a second site with similar in nature to get the content and linking from that site to sales site can have a very good bonus. 2. Concentrate on getting the title of each page and very targeted and have a good navigatio structure so that bots can find the contents of each page as and when they are on your site. 3. Just dont try to rank the homepage by making it Search engine friendly byt also take time to get the links to some internal pages as well as the homepage because the Search engines ranks pages and not sites. 4. Try to leak the PR as little as possible and so always pointing to the homepage from every page is beneficial and so always have the navigation structure in that fashion. 5. Last but not the least leave a reason for the visitors to come back to your site because its not all about having them there but its about making them regular. For this you need the fresh content and which is also liked by the bots. Thanks Shabbir Bhimani |

There is some excellent software called WebCEO that I use which will analyze your page and tell you what the major SE's would think about it. I think you can get a free trial from their site, although I can't remember what that is right now. Search for the name on Google and you will find it. A good example of a well built, highly optimized site is http://housepaintingestimates.com. Studying this page, you will see an excellent domain name for the specified keywords (very important), an excellent title using the desired keywords (also very important), META tags for those SE's that still look for it (it can't hurt to have them, but can hurt not to), terrific use of header tags, which many SE's use to "read" and relate the important parts of your page. And finally content, which above anything else, is very important for your site to have. This site has all of those ingredients and ranks very highly in Yahoo and MSN. I use this site as a "how to" for my students when looking at SEO. |

Content on your site is king, but links from other sites to yours is definitely queen. |
