Hi there apbear --

A search for NJ museums with Native American collections yields a
number of results. There are no museums (other than the Newark Museum)
listed in Newark. However, some of these others are nearby and may be
what your friend is thinking of. The more distant ones I've added
just in case you have an interest to travel to one. I've broken the
listings below into those within 15-30 minutes of Newark and those
that are farther away.

NEAR NEWARK -----

Montclair Art Museum
3 South Mountain Avenue, Montclair, New Jersey

The Museum carries out this mission through its high quality American
and Native American art collections and varied exhibitions, education
activities, and related art presentations.

New Jersey Civil War and Native American Museum (aka Camp Olden Civil
War Round Table and Museum, Inc.)

It also features a large collection of Native American tools and
artifacts, most of which were found within miles of the museum. The
museum is housed in a two-story, 7 room tenant house contructed about
1730 which is on the grounds of Veterans Park in Hamilton Township.

Seton Hall University Museum, South Orange, New Jersey.

Found several references to Native American research being done there,
but no link to a museum website. This might help:
