A friend has a tradition of naming her kids names ending in "i."
Until now she has had girls, but now is expeciting a boy. Her husband
thinks all boys names ending in "i" are girlish, so I want some names
to give her suitable for a boy. So far I have Avi, Levi and Eli.

Hi Nkamon,

The YeahBaby! baby name search has an option to select the last letter
of the name, and the gender of the child. When I did a search for
boys names, at least 2 letters, ending in "i", I got 854 results!
Many of these are Indian or Arabic in origin, but others are not - and
you can narrow the search by choosing origin. You can also get the
definition.

Example: The Welsh name Kai means alternately earth, wind, fire, or
ocean. What a kid!

Example: Rudi (German): Wolf

Example: Yuri (various, incuding Russian and Japanese): to hear - variant of George

Here's the URL for the search page: http://baby-names.yeahbaby.com/.
I suggest you share with your friend and let her play with it to come
up with options that she likes.

I knew of this website because of a previous question that I answered
- but you can find it and others by doing a search of Google for "baby
name finder" or similar terms.

Most of the male names I can think of that end in "i" are Israeli or
Hebrew names. Ari, Omri, Malachi, Mordecai, and Uri (or Yuri) come to
mind.

For a Tolkien fan, there's always Gimli. ;-)

One of the most-personable players in baseball is the Twins Torii Hunter.

And we also have Hideki Matsui, Tsuyoshi Shinjo and Hideki Irabu.

There's also Deivi Cruz.

If her husband's a baseball fan, this should help overcome the
objections. (And as a baby gift my suggestion is -- if they pick one
of these names buy a baseball and send it to the player with a request
for an autograph.)

Best regards,

Italian names sometimes end in ?i? too. However, this site might be of
inspirational interest. The ?Advanced Search? tab includes select by
?Last Letter?.

Gimli indeed!

The husband is right. The names are either girlish or un-American.
What ethnicity is the couple?

Nonsense Nelson -- Mordecai's a name that's archaic but very American.
Again, going back to baseball, we have Mordecai Brown.

Adlai is certainly an American name. Adlai Stevenson was a Democratic
candidate for President of the United States. Twice.

Adlai Stevenson was a loser. Twice.

Would you want to name anybody after a loser?

Wow ... I have done it again!

Dai

It's very common in Wales.

Meaning: Welsh: The beloved, the adored one. Japanese: Great.

Origin: Japanese, Welsh

Sometimes I even surprise myself.

Of course, if you wanted to be really imaginative, you could name him Guzzi.

I'm sure that I've seen the name somewhere but I can't remember where.

It's probably Scottish.

I would like to amend my comment. The name is not girly if the
terminating "i" is part of a dipthong (Mordecai would be one example).
Also, I meant to say ethnic, rather than un-American, which, unless
you live in a Blue State, are not the same.

Ah probonopublico, ?guzzi? -- Moto Guzzi -- ?tis an Italian motorbike
marque. So you don?t get the ?leg over?. I was going to go by the
alias of PinkPanda (my bike?s name and a personal alter-ego name) but
fortunately noticed the name conflict. Don?t think ?she? would have
been best pleased. But yea, good name for a kid.

there is no letter K in the Welsh alphabet so the entry on the name
'Kai' is incorrect.

Place names with the letter K have been Anglicised.

To make the 'K' sound we use the letter C which is always hard there
is no soft C sound in Welsh. The name Kai for example as given earlier
would be spellt 'Cai'

Here is an example of the Welsh alphabet
