It depends on your current age and other co-morbid conditions, such as diabetes, hypertension, coronary artery disease, strokes, etc. I have seen patient live anywhere from 6 months to 15 years. Usual cause of death: cardiovascular event (heart attack, stroke..) or infection (sepsis, pneumonia..) If you are otherwise healthy (no co-morbid conditions and well controlled diabetes), based on my experience, you would expect 10 years or more. In Japan, they found that the more frequent the dialysis is done (4x/week, rather than 3x/week as in US), the better off you were in terms of survival. But the caveat is, do you want to spend 4 days a week hooked up to a machine 2-4 hours at a time, getting poked around all the time. Good luck. |

Recieving hemodialysis is to prolong your life... not end it... My grandmother actually died while hooked up to the machine... she was on it for close to 17 yrs. When a person is supposed to die, they will... my mom had just had her fistula done when she died, at 39. The dialysis would have helped to prolong her life.... not end it.... Only time will tell in your journey, but just remember that no matter the outcome.. everything happens for a reason... try to use this experience as a learning tool rather than a hindering experience... all you can do is live life to it's fullest... the best thing you can do is think about the life that you have here and now.... everyone is going to die someday... tomorrow is today's future... all the best to you and your loved ones... remember that the time you do have left should be quality, not quantity..... good luck with your journey through life.... and just take it as it comes... |
