Hello Sarah Ann

Thank-you for your question.

I have researched your question for the year 2002 as this was the year
where I could gather the most information and break it down most
completely for you.

In 2002 in the USA, the total number of deaths was 2,443,387 people.
This equates to a death rate of 845.3 deaths per 100,000 people. The
average life expectancy was 77.3 years. When this data is broken down
further to concentrate solely on children the following data is
obtained:

Age (years) Number of deaths Rate per 100,000
less than 1 28,034 695.0
1-4 4,858 31.2
5-9 3,018 15.2
10-14 4,132 19.5
15-19 13,812 67.8

These statistics were obtained from the National Center for Health
Statistics (NCHS):
http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/deaths.htm
http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/pdf/mortality/nvsr53_05t03.pdf

The NCHS is the primary source of health, birth and death data for the
USA, this is confirmed on the US census.gov website:
http://www.census.gov/population/www/socdemo/death.html

If you require any further assistance on this subject please ask for
clarification and I will do my best to respond swiftly.
