Hi tryiian-ga, and thank you for asking a question that served to
remind me to meditate today!

"Om mani padme om" is a Sanskrit phrase, and a mantra used widely in
prayer and meditation (in Buddhism and Hinduism in particular.)

In both my searches for this question and my own education in Buddhism
over the last few years, I have found many suggested translations.
Among them:

"See God in Everything"
From Angelic Messages on Global Physics, a new age site
( http://www.globalpsychics.com/lp/angel_messages/angelopen.htm )

"Becoming, becoming, always becoming the Buddha"
From a book exploring the relationship between spirituality and
addiction, called Spirituality for Recovery, by Jim Joy, 1993
( http://www.realtime.net/pub/misc/sfr.txt )

"Hail the Jewel of the Lotus Flower"
(the image of a Lotus flower commonly refers to the Buddha)
From the personal travel journals of Jon and Heidi Connal
( http://www.connal.com/rtw/journal/aug/2401.htm )

"I bow to the Jewel within"
From the description of a Tibetan Prayer Wheel for sale through
Destiny Creations ( http://www.destinycreations.net/images/webpge-newprayerwheel.htm
)

"harmony is the core of our being"
From the personal page of Dr. Carl A. Hammerschlag, M.D "Schlag Byte
3/18/2002 - "Healing Chants"

"the most perfect seed within the most beautiful flower"
Told to me by the owner of a small shop in Great Barrington, Mass.,
filled with new age books and materials and meditation aids, charms,
etc.

As you can see and as I have learned, there is no consensus on the
literal translation of the mantra, but it clearly deals with a point
of focus or a constant center within a larger body. (Finding a focus
or center is the key to many meditative practices.)

I hope this answers your question... if you'd like any further help,
please feel free to post a Request for Clarification!

Best,
Rebecca

Did you mean "onomatopoeia"? The pronunciation sounds VERY similar
to your phrase. It's a writing term that refers to words that
represent the sound something makes, and sometimes in sequence. An
example would be "tick tick tock went the clock."

An example on this web site is "The ducks were quacking and the bees
were buzzing."

"Om mani padme hum" is a mantra to aid meditation. You'll find more
information at http://www.dharma-haven.org/tibetan/meaning-of-om-mani-padme-hung.htm

"Tibetan Buddhists believe that saying the mantra (prayer), Om Mani
Padme Hum, out loud or silently to oneself, invokes the powerful
benevolent attention and blessings of Chenrezig, the embodiment of
compassion. Viewing the written form of the mantra is said to have the
same effect..."
