Hi! I've been trying to clean up the spyware on my boyfriend's
laptop, and he has a variant of the vx2 among other malware. I did an
update on adaware and then tried to run the program. The program kept
freezing up so I started the scan in safe mode, and the computer froze
up again. How do I keep ad aware from freezing up (version 1.05)?

You might try pressing CTLR-ALT-DELETE and then terminating all the
processes that you don't want running in the background before running
Ad Aware.

Nockmdead --

You're proceeding in the right direction by using Safe mode. If
you're still running into problems, I'd run HijackThis and disable
everything that looks suspicious, as it's the safest way to deal with
things that have appeared in the Registry. Do you have any experience
with it? It's undoubtedly what the people here would recommend:

Well, I do have hijack this installed all ready. The problem is that
I don't know what I should be deleting. And with running processes,
again I'm not sure which ones I should kill and which ones I
shouldn't.
I'm going to post the hijack this log for you and see if you see
anything unusual. Thanks.

Nockmdead --

I'd suggest posting the HijackThis logs to the Lavasoft support forum.
Those people there are pros at picking up software in memory that's
suspicious. And they do it for free!

Best regards,

I had a similar problem the other week, couldn't resolve it with ad
aware so I installed MS' new beta product. It kicked the crap out of
the spyware and removed 15 pieces of spyware that neither adaware or
spybot or search and destroy could! Grab it quick while it's still
free!

Subratam.org is a lively community of anti-malware fans. They keep an
up-to-date list of specialized removal software on their main page at:
http://www.subratam.org/?page=removal

There are 4 programs listed for VX2 (aka VX2.BetterInternet, L2M or
Look2Me) removal, all called VX2Finder. 2 are for Windows 2k/XP, 2
are for Windows 98/Me. Download both for your boyfriend's operating
system. They are currently listed as downloads 9 and 10.

To use the removal tool, click the "Find" button and then proceed to
clean everything it finds by pressing the User Agent, Guardian, and
Delete buttons. Restart and repeat this process 2 more times. You
should find on each subsequent restart that you find less and less VX2
components. Finish it off with a scan from Ad-Aware.

VX2 works by attaching itself to the Winlogon process. This process
is required for Windows to function. By attaching itself to Winlogon
in particular it can also make the system highly unstable. This also
has the benefit of completely hiding its operation and keeping it out
of the range of most removal tools. It keeps constant watch over its
children files, and when it sees one deleted, it immediately replaces
it.

I would also advise you to uninstall and reinstall Ad-Aware *after*
you successfully remove VX2. VX2 could be the culprit of the Ad-Aware
crashes.

Do I win?

I tried snowdizx's suggestion and downloaded the ms beta software.
The ms spyware worked! So, snowbiz if you'll post in the answer box,
I'll pay you. Thanks to all who answered.

Unfortunately I'm just a user out in the real world, not an actual
'branded' google researcher. I'd like to become a researcher however!
Consider it a freebie!!! Thanks! --snowdizx
