the best alternative is the ephpod (http://www.ephpod.com/) which
unfortunately does not support the ipod shuffle and is taking a break
from development

well, i can see a directory structure throught he usb mass storage
drivers, is there anyway i can copy mp3's into the directory structure

According to an apple store employee, you can't access the music files
from the directory structure. The available space can be partitioned
into non-music mass storage and music. Presumably, you can't get to
one from the other.

Why do you not want iTunes?

because my computer runs Windows Server 2003 and iTunes will not
recognize the ipod ....

unfortunately i only have access to 2003, i guess i might have to go
out and buy a oem version of xp :(

or switch?!

Winowns Server 2003 on a client machine? That's odd. Yeah no iTunes
for you. Time to get a Mac.

OK i got maybe two possible solutions
1. Is it possible to open the usb drive in my Computer.
-If so make sure you can access hidden files
-Tools>Folder Options>View>Clikc on show hidden files
-From there click on the hidden file there then navigate that to where
it will have a bunch of folders that go F## stick some files in there
maybe that will work
-Im not sure if the shuffle is the same as my mini

2. Im not sure if this program supports the shuffle but if you have
winamp or if you dont you download it from nullsoft
-Once you have that install this plugin
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=106528
-I actually just checked his website he says he needs money to buy one
so he can figure out how to add songs to it.
-Once he does that the plug in should work maybe just wait a while

I know this isnt helpful but people are working on it and it just came out :s

you can try the anapod explorer. It says the shuffle coming soon, but
if its the same format as other pods i would imagine it will already
work. Doesn't say anything about 2003 support, but you can try the
free dl and give it a shot. http://www.redchairsoftware.com/anapod/

I personally use Winamp & ml_ipod to manage my Shuffle.

Has anyone made a firmware hack or something to allow the partition
for data files and playable music to be one and the same? I hate the
fact that I have to jack around with itunes, or winamp or just
software in general. I should just be able to load the songs via
windows explorer and ta-da, I can play them. This whole jacking with
extra software is just BS, and that goes for every mp3 player.

Well 2 comments to make here. 1 the Shuffle is compleatly diffrent
from any of the other iPods and is teh simpleist. 2 you can just load
files onto the device if you do the following
http://optusnet.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/shuffle-db/rebuild_db-0.7-pre1.zip
go to that link and get the exe

Maybe I've been too lucky, but this tool has worked for me on XP and
2000 PCs and a 512 MB iPod shuffle

Of course it requires some programming knowledge (python) but it's
worthwhile, from my POV!

I can't believe the crap these Apple-fanitics give you for an answer
"time to buy a mac" there are plenty of ways you can rebuild the
shuffle's database w/o having to use iTUNES nor an expensive Mac (most
of them are listed in the comments already). Don'e listen to these
Apple Zealots.

I used xplay just now for the regular iPod, as I don't want itunes to
get their paws into my stuff. Go to
http://www.mediafour.com/products/xplay/ and download the trial
version (it will want to charge $30 or so after the trial expires, I
think it's 2 weeks). The easiest, most simple thing I have done after
messing with two or three other programs (winamp the most annoying of
them, as it connected to doubleclick.com instantly to give my info,
and didn't tell me how to actually dump files into the ipod).
