Criteria:
- meeting place should be as close to free as possible
- meeting place should be in midtown, ideally around Grand Central or
the Times Square Area
- meeting place should allow food, and/or serve light refreshments
- meeting place should ideally allow alcoholic beverages, and/or serve
them, but this is optional
- meeting place should be "intellectually themed"
- meeting place should accomodate between five and fifty people
(closer to five for the time being)
I'm looking for a meeting place in midtown Manhattan (NYC, NY) that
can accomodate a group of like-minded people with the above criteria. |

Why not just gather at a restaurant, or in one of the many hotel or
office-building lobby spaces in the area? They are comfortable and
quite conducive to conversation. For a group of 5-10 people, that
shouldn't be a problem, even on a very impromptu basis.
Or perhaps you need a more formal meeting setting, where a
presentation can be given in private?
Let us know a bit more about your needs (and your budget).

pafalafa-ga:
- The current meeting place is a bar, and I'd like some place less
noisy, and more "intellectual"
- There really is no budget. Anything paid for would have to come out
of my pocket. I'm willing to do that, but can't afford more than say
$50 or so, and certainly not per hour.
As for restaurants, those would work, except in the city they are
often themed (annoyingly so, ala ESPNZone), and overly-crowded (moreso
with the dollar so low and so many Europeans vacationing on the
strength of the Euro). As for hotels/lobbies, I've thought of that,
but anything I've looked at has been exorbitantly priced.

"Intellectually themed" made me think of the New York Public Library,
which in turn reminded me of the Bryant Park Grill behind the library.
I haven't dined there, but it seems like a nice setting (perhaps
depending on what's going on in Bryant Park).

I suppose it would be crowded during certain times. But would this
restaurant do? If so, I would be happy to post it (perhaps along with
some reviews) as an answer.

I've walked by there - I didn't realise there was an indoors part.
I've seen the outdoors part be very crowded when the weather is warm,
but that I would suspect. Since the meetings would be on Wednesday
nights, it's unlikely that it would be *too* crowded... so that would
suffice as an answer. I'd appreciate the reviews posted as well
(including Zagat's). Thanks!

Unfortunately, Zagat reviews are available online only to subscribers.
However, I have found reviews from the New York Times (on the
restaurant's site as well as a summary of an older review), New York
magazine, Gayot, and a few others. Would that be sufficient?
(General consensus: the space is excellent, the food is nothing
special.) I could include a link to the search result for the Bryant
Park Grill on the Zagat web site, in case you are a subscriber or
wanted to subscribe ($3.95 for a month / $19.95 for a year).
