I imagine that finding a round number will prove difficult as it would
seem that every minute I type, there would be another added. You
might try a governement site which releases information in 5 year
increments about bsuinesses and gives statistics, such as the US
Census Bureau (www.census.gov). I fear that 5 year old data may be
the best that you will find. `1997 Economic Census data may be found
at: http://www.census.gov/epcd/www/econ97.html although I should warn
you that this one, like many governmenr sites, is slightly difficult
to navigate.
If this does not help, Try:
http://www.sec.gov/edgar.shtml
which states: "The SEC requires all public companies (except foreign
companies and companies with less than $10 million in assets and 500
shareholders) to file registration statements, periodic reports, and
other forms electronically through EDGAR. Anyone can access and
download this information for free. Here you'll find links to a
complete list of filings available through EDGAR and instructions for
searching the EDGAR database."
There may be help there.
Disclosure Corporate Snapshots is a database of approximately 11,000
publically owned companies filing with the U.S. Securities and
Exchange. Although not a counting of public companies, it could list
some specific ones if you so need.
I again imagine that an exact number would be very difficult if not
impossible to find; census data may be your best hope at approximating
a number. Good luck! |
