Dear Sensation,

According to Answers.com, an intranet is "A privately maintained
computer network that can be accessed only by authorized persons,
especially members or employees of the organization that owns it."

They go further and say: "An inhouse Web site that serves the
employees of the enterprise. Although intranet pages may link to the
Internet, an intranet is not a site accessed by the general public.

Using programming languages such as Java, client/server applications
can be built on intranets. Since Web browsers that support Java run
under Windows, Mac and Unix, such programs also provide cross-platform
capability.

Intranets use the same communications protocols and hypertext links as
the Web and thus provide a standard way of disseminating information
internally and extending the application worldwide at the same time.
See network computer and extranet.

The term as originally coined in the preceding definition has become
so popular that it is often used to refer to any inhouse LAN and
client/server system."

At the same site, they also have a more comprehensive explanation, by Wikipedia.

I hope this answered your question. Please contact me if you need
further clarification on this answer before you rate it. My search
strategy was pretty simple, and I recommend you'll use it if you want
to know the meanings of different terms (such as Intranet): If you
write [definition:] in the Google search box, and then the term you're
looking for, you'll get pages where there are definitions of this
thing. A second way, if you just write the term's name in the Google
search box, you'll get, before the results, a blue line, where the
term is underlined. Clicking there will bring you to a dictionary
definition.
