I would like to convert addresses/zip codes to GPS coordinates. Is
this possible? Basically, we are going to put a map on our site of
everywhere our customers have ordered from. We get about 100 orders a
day, so it is not feasible to look up each set of coordinates.

I need some sort of a database that has all of these (but I don't want
to pay a fortune...).

Ideally, I would be able to convert an actual address to a coordinate.
Alternatively, it would be ok if I could convert zip codes to a
coordinate.

Please let me know if you have any questions. As I said, I prefer a
database, but if there is a good web based solution I suppose this
could be done manually.

If, by GPS coordinates, you're asking about lat/long, then there are
data sources that will do this for you.

For instance, type in any address in the form here:

http://www.melissadata.com/Lookups/addressverify.asp

and you'll get a slew of information -- including lat/long -- about the address.

The MelissaData folks seem to be the online king (queen?) of zip code
information, so you might want to contact them about additional
resources to automate the lookup procedure.

Is this the sort of thing you have in mind? Please let me know.

My site, GPS Visualizer (http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/), can find the
coordinates of addresses and plot them on a map.

I use the TIGER database to find the locations; if you want to run
your own geocoding software/database, it's not available for direct
download (it's over 700MB!), but you can build your own using the
instructions at http://search.cpan.org/~sderle/Geo-Coder-US/US.pm --
you can use their live demo, http://geocoder.us/, to find a few
addresses, but not hundreds.

Hello adam,

I looked at the gpsvisualizer site, and it's a beauty....thanks (both
for creating is, and letting us know about it).

Could you do us a favor. This unanswered question:

http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=453851

asked about an online facility to easily add icons (e.g. pushpins) to
street maps. It looks like GPS Visualizer *should* be able to do
this, but I didn't see an easy way to make it happen.

Any thoughts...?
