I'm looking for a list of the to 20-30 online consumer retail
companies in the U.S. by sales.

I'm interested in both multi-channel and pure online-only companies.
The data must be as recent as 2Q 2001. Thanks.

So many statistics! The dynamic link below most concisely presents
what you are asking for. It is a list of the top 100 internet
retailers, including sales numbers, courtesy of Russell Reynolds
Associates and Verifone. The companies listed include multi-channel:

http://retailindustry.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?site=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.stores.org%2Farchives%2F00top100int_1.html

If the dynamic link doesn't get you there, I've outlined below how to
proceed. Along the way you will find other great sources of online
retail statistics. Even if the dynamic link works, you may wish to
trace my steps from the beginning as there is such a wealth of
information.

Start at this link:

http://retailindustry.about.com/library/blweb.htm

Scroll to the bottom of the page to the section entitled "Statistics
and Research"
Select "Retail Statistics & Sales"
Scroll down the page to "Leading Top Retailers"
Scroll down to the link titled "Top Retailers by Sales"
The forth listing down "Top 100 Internet Retailers", click, voila!
You're there.

As I mentioned, along the way to the indicated page, you will fine a
link to the official government statistics and reports on your topic:

Happy "statisticking"!

Thanks for the help. Do you have the date of these numbers though?
They seem a bit old. I'm looking for 2001 data. Thanks.

I see what you mean, that there is no date attached to the data. I
did an exhaustive search looking for another list of company names,
and found one from Fortune magazine. Unfortunately it's dated January
1, 2000. If you wish to look at it anyway, go to the Fortune Magazine
link below, select "all lists" from the left hand menu. On the lists
page, go to the second link from the bottom, the "Fortune e-50".

http://www.fortune.com

Stores magazine just came out with list of the largest retailers, with
annual sales figures for 2001. Just scroll to the bottom of the page
below and select the group you wish to see, 1-20 and 21-40. However,
this list does not exclude companies that do not sell online, though
these days most of them do.

My suggestion at this point would be to use the recent data from the
Stores magazine list and exclude the grocery stores and other
companies that obviously don't sell online. Though a couple of months
ago I read that even Safeway takes orders online in test locations.
Perhaps that's why we don't see a recent list as you describe it...the
distinction between regular and online merchants has blurred.

Two companies that provide statistics on the top retailers that are
EXCLUSIVELY INTERNET are Jupiter Metrix and Neilsen. I've provided
their web sites, where you can see the lists.

data you need. Wish I could have helped you!

I appreciate the effort but as you noted, it wasn't quite what I was
looking for. Thanks again

thewizard,

I believe you'll need to initiate the refund; I cannot do it from my
end. Wish I could have helped you more.

Here are the top 10 (of which eight are multi-channel):

Looks like you can also buy a report from Retail Forward (that's where
the data comes from) to get the top 50. Or maybe you have to subscribe
to their service.
