Hi This question is regarding selling a car on www.ebaymotors.com. I have a prospective buyer from another state for my car, but we are both confused on how to transfer the title. I have arranged for the car to be shipped by a shipping company. Can someone advice on how to transfer the title. My auction is closing in a few hours. |

Every state has different laws when it comes to transferring title, but the basics are the same. The title of the car gives instructions on how to fill out the title correctly and transfer ownership. For the seller this generally means recording information on the buyer and sending it to your state DMV to absolve you of liability on the car should anything go wrong. The buyer needs to fill out the transfer portion of the title and turn it into their state to transfer ownership. The buyer should be sure that the car they are buying is legal in their particular state. For example, California has strict emission regulations that may not apply in other states. http://forums.ebay.com/db2/thread.jsp?forum=93&thread=410191460&modified=1088649977567&ssPageName=CMDV:WC000088 |

I agree with david1977. Read the title VERY CAREFULLY, you only have one chance to fill it out correctly. Consider taking the title to your local DMV along with the buyers information and odometer reading at the time of the sale. They can assist you in filling it out correctly before mailing it to the new owner, and at the same time, you can fill out the sellers report of sale to absolve you of further liability. Of course, only do this AFTER the check clears... ~~Cynthia |
