Can anyone tell me where I could get a copy of the book listed below?
I've tried e-bay and online second-hand book sellers to no avail.

Katherine Tozer was the author of at least two books that featured an
elephant named Mumfie...I'm pretty sure this is the character you're
referring to. The two Tozer books on Mumfie that I am aware of --
"Here comes Mumfie" and "The Wanderings of Mumfie" -- are indeed
out-of -print and hard to come by. There is only one library in the
US carrying a Tozer original Mumfie book.
However, a fellow named Britt Allcroft seems to have inherited the
Mumfie franchise somehow, and has his name attached to a few Mumfie
books and videos:

Might any of these meet your needs?

The Amazon link doesn't appear to work.
Instead, head to:
http://www.amazon.com
and type [ Mumfie ] in the search box to see the list of books and videos for sale.

Actually....
You're probably better off heading to the rare books seller, Alibris,
and searching there, as they seem to have Tozer-original Mumfie books
for sale:
Go to:
http://www.alibris.com
and enter [ mumfie ] in the title box, and [ tozer ] in the author
box, and you'll find three books for sale:
1.
The wanderings of Mumfie
by Tozer, Katharine
Mumfie's magic box
by Tozer, Katharine
Mumfie's Uncle Samuel
by Tozer, Katharine

Thanks for your query.
But I'm pretty sure that there is no confusion between Alfie and
Mumfie. Alfie is a story about a ragamuffin boy and witches! Other
characters (as I remember) include the witches Sophie and
Pennsylvania, an evil cat (Magnolia?) and Dr Crabtree (I think).
Thanks for your help anyway!

I think the publisher may well have been John Murray and not (as I
originally stated Macmillan). Sorry if I've misled anyone. Although
resident in France, I would certainly be interested to know of any
libraries - and more especially bookshops! - stocking the book in the
UK.
Many thanks

Hi barnabyrudge,
The U.S. Library of Congress has a copy:
Tozer, Katharine, 1907-1943.
Adventures of Alfie,
London, J. Murray [1941]
p. cm.
http://catalog.loc.gov/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?DB=local&PAGE=First
Unfortunately, I've been unable to find another copy, whether in a
bookshop or library. Perhaps another researcher will have more luck.
If not, it is sure to show up eventually (all books do) and it is just
a matter of keeping an eye out on all of the used books websites and
ebay, etc. Be sure to sign up to be notified when one is listed
whenever possible.
