I seem to recall a speech that Ann Richards (I believe it was her) gave regarding George Bush (Sr.)'s record on women's issues, where she said something folky to the effect that "If George Bush liked women any more, I'd have to take in some ironing." (That is, that Bush's efforts to stop wage inequality between the genders had only made things worse -- if he did any more, Ann would have to earn extra money ironing others' clothes.) I'd like the exact quote and a reference. Thanks. |

Hello. The quote actually came from Texas Lt. Governor Bill Hobby. In 1984, Walter Mondale and Geraldine Ferraro were campaigning in Texas against Ronald Reagan and George Bush (Sr). Mondale and Ferraro were joined at campaign rallies by various top Texas Democrats, including Hobby and state treasurer Ann Richards. At one event for Mondale/Ferraro, Bill Hobby joked, "If Reagan loved women any more, Ann Richards would have to take in ironing." From the Boston Globe, August 3, 1984: 'Even a moderate like Lt. Gov. Bill Hobby felt no compunction about bashing Reagan by saying, "If Reagan loved women any more, Ann Richards would have to take in ironing."' source: Boston Globe, Thomas Oliphant "MONDALE AND FERRARO TRY TO DUPLICATE DEMOCRATIC MIRACLE IN TEXAS," August 3, 1984. pg. 1 http://nl.newsbank.com/nl-search/we/Archives?p_product=BG&p_theme=bg&p_action=search&p_maxdocs=200&p_text_search-0=%22ann%20AND%20richards%20AND%20would%20AND%20have%20AND%20to%20AND%20take%20AND%20in%20AND%20ironing.%22&s_dispstring=%22ann%20richards%20would%20have%20to%20take%20in%20ironing.%22&p_perpage=10&p_sort=YMD_date:D&xcal_useweights=no ---------- search strategy: I searched a library newspaper database for: "ann richards" and "take in ironing" I hope this helps. |
