Dear joannebw, I assume that the artist you have in mind is August von Siegen, born ca. 1850 in Vienna, Austria. In that case, the answer is: Yes, he was known as August Siegen. He signed paintings with a plain "Aug[ust] Siegen", omitting the aristocratic title "von". Here are some examples: August von Siegen, "Motif from Venice". Signed "Aug. Siegen". http://www.beyars.com/kunst/popup_schmuckstueck-grossbild.php?prodid=10811 Source: BeyArs.com, Art Dealer August von Siegen, "Harbour Scene". Signed "Aug. Siegen". http://www.p4a.com/itemsummary/16648.htm Source: p4A.com Ltd. Antiques Database August von Siegen, "Market Scene in Cairo". Signed "Aug. Siegen". http://www.p4a.com/itemsummary/111319.htm Source: p4A.com Ltd. Antiques Database Hope this answers your question! I believe that "August von Siegen" as referred to by Scriptor is the painter you have in mind. However, to avoid a possible misunderstanding I would like to point out that apparently another painter by this name is "Auguste Von Siegen (1796-1869)": http://www.crgalleries.com/vonsiegen.html The German name "Auguste" is a female name. Therefore, http://www.crgalleries.com/vonsiegen.html would either mistakenly describe him as a male painter. Or, "Auguste" would possibly be his name as pronounced and written in French. |
