Dear brojohn-ga: In addition to being a Google researcher I am an emergency room nurse and have personal experience in dealing with cardiac arrest. The minimum standard of care for any patient whose heart has stopped for any reason is essentially the same. It is directed to restoring a viable cardiac rhythm and correcting the underlying cause. The American Heart Association has published guidelines for dealing with cardiac arrest and they are universal regardless of cause. They follow what is called an algorhythm, which is a decision tree with specific steps to follow in treating the patient according to clinical sign and symptoms. These guidelines are known as the Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) guidelines. They are based on medical research and are updated every several years. The current guidelines may be found at the following link but are very technical in nature: http://www.ace.cc/new%20acls%20guidelines.htm In your scenario, once a viable heart rhythm has been established the focus will shift to surgically correcting the internal damage done by the perforation. But first things first! Getting the heart beat back and stabilizing the patient are the number one priority. Please understand that this information is academic in nature and do not represent or replace professional medical advice. I sincerely hope this is the information you were looking for. Kinglouie |
