How do you delete a Control Panel icon? When I am in the Classic view,
you can see all the icons. When I right click the icon I want to delete,
(in this case it is this Compaq Advisor icon that I want to delete),
all it gives me is OPEN and CREATE A SHORTCUT. There is no way to
delete the icon. Can you help me on this? Thank you.

Hi charlotte35,

Control Panel icons are called " .cpl " files.

Use your computer's "FIND" feature in the START button, and search for
all .cpl files. You can find all of them by entering *.cpl in the
'file' or 'file name' text entry box in the FIND page.

When you have all the Control Panle icons listed in the results,
determine which one is the one you want to remove. The .cpl file name
will be similar to the name of the program you want to remove: Compaq
Advisor

You want to MOVE the icon. Right now, just to see if it works, RIGHT
CLICK on the icon in the list, select CUT, then PASTE IT onto the
DESKTOP icon right next to the START button (or the desktop itself).

Check to see that it is gone.

Let me know if this works, if so, I'd like to post the Answer in the Answer Box...

Cynthia-

Doing the SEARCH and looking for the .CPL files worked. I was able
to delete that icon and file. Thanks so much.

Hi charlotte35, this might help: Do a search for .cpl files. How?
Start>Search>All files and folders. Type ".cpl" in the upper box
(without the quotation marks) then click search. Locate your icon in
the list, and you can delete it from there. If you need to get it back
again, re-install compaq advisor. Also check out the link

I think TweakUI(from Microsoft, free)has an option that allows you to
hide various Control Panel icons. It does not delete them, which might
be even better.
