I've installed Forefire as my default browser. How do you turn off (disable) the autocomplete feature? | |

i believe you're referring to 'history'. there's no way in which i'm aware to tell firefox not to consult it's history when typing in an address. the second best thing you could do would be to clear the history often in Tools -> Options -> Privacy and click the button 'Clear' next to History. you could also try expanding the History preference (by clicking on the '+' next to "History") and changing the value to "0" for the number of days to remember. perhaps this will trigger your desired effect without needing to always clear the history. |

Yes, I've done what you suggest (entered "0" for days to save history) because it's the only way I could think of to get around the problem. I still can't figure out why Firefox doesn't allow you to turn off autocomplete. It's a simple procedure in IE. Thanks. |

You *can* delete individual entries: Just do a Shift-Delete when the autocomplete result you want is selected. You can delete individual entries from within Firefox - select the autoform entry that you want gone, then press Shift+Delete. |

The following might be helpful to you. http://www.4webhelp.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2455 I also discovered that indeed you can disable thru code the autocompletion feature of foxfire. I'm using FireFox 0.9.3 and have been able to do it two ways. 1. Doing it the FireFox way: <input type="autocomplete" disableautocomplete> See for more info: http://www.xulplanet.com/references/elemref/ref_textboxFirefoxAutoComplete.html and specifically: http://www.xulplanet.com/references/elemref/ref_textboxFirefoxAutoComplete.html#attr_disableautocomplete 2. I also tried using the MSIE extension autocomplete="off" as follows and it worked with FireFox, too: <input name=user_who type="text" autocomplete="off"> |

Thanks, tlspiegel, the technique you describe does allow for deletion of individual entries. Still, I wonder if there isn't another work-around to just get FF to stop listing alternatives (of sites you've previously visited) when you start typing in an address. I'd already discovered the 4webhelp site (through googling) but it didn't help me because I don't know where or how you can enter the command: <input type="autocomplete" disableautocomplete> Do you how to do this? I tried typing it into the address bar but that didn't work. Is it an html command? If so, it won't help me because I don't know HTML. |

I believe this can be done by editing the user.js file which holds many user preferences that are not normally found in the option menus. Plase see this page: http://www.mozilla.org/unix/customizing.html#prefs Especially this section: "// Turn that annoying autocomplete popup REALLY off: // (This actually has a UI but it's buried.) user_pref("browser.urlbar.autocomplete.enabled", false); user_pref("browser.urlbar.showPopup", false); user_pref("browser.urlbar.showSearch", false);" Many of these can be accessed changed by typing "about:config" as a url in mozilla but I couldn't find the autocomplete option there so you might have to use the user.js method. |

Thanks, Burning apathy. I first typed about:config in the location bar and low and behold there was a line for "enable autocomplete....true" But I wasn't sure how to re-set it, so I right clicked reset and now the line is gone but the autocomplete is still on! I then went to the web link and read about the user.js and the //commands, but I don't know how to insert this file in my profile or how to enable it. If anyone knows how to do this, or how to simply use about:config to turn off the autocomplete, please let me know. |

Hi aubotsx, Just wanted to let you know I haven't forgotten about your question. I really wish I could find an answer for you that really works. I have Firefox installed on my machine (though I don't use it) and all 'fixes' I've found on the web - either don't work, or the information isn't relevant to disabling the autocomplete function. So many postings on the web are an indication that you're not the only one who has is frustrated about the feature. I'll keep looking in my spare time and if anything turns up positive - I'll be sure to post here. Good luck to you, tlspiegel |
