I am looking for a map showing the top 20 gold mining regions in the
world, based on current production. Top individual mines by name would
be useful but not essential.

This looks to be exactly what you need:

but if I've somehow misunderstood your needs, just post a Request for
Clarification, and I'll be happy to search for additional resources.

P.S. I should have mentioned earlier that the map -- while mostly a
map of major gold mining sites -- also includes some non-gold mining
operations. Let me know if you need a list of only the gold-mining
sites to augment the map.

As you noted, this map covers other metals. It is obviously a map with
a political agenda. Ideally, I would like the top 20 gold mining areas
only, ranked by size/production. Any ideas on that?

goodwyn-ga,

I'll be glad to do some more work on this, but one clarifying question, if I may.

The list of the top 20 gold mines can be found here:

http://www.goldinstitute.org/supply/topmines.html

Is this the information you need, or must it be presented on a map?
Let me know, so I can best focus my follow-up searching.

Thanks,

paf

First time looking at Google Answers - I am a mining geologist and
former mining analyst - I pride myself in my research skills when it
comes to my industry - I have so much raw reference data in hard copy
form and don't know if you have everything you require but please let
me know if I can be of any assistance.

Thanks for your interest, Doug, but in this case I already got what I
needed. Good to know you're out there, though, when I need something
else.

No problem - have to say I was somewhat professionally offended by
what I considered a pretty poor answer first posted back to you - not
much thought went into actually looking at the suggested material and
extremely dated - the latter being something that I would consider
particularly subpar given the nature of information flow provided by
the internet...

anyway - feel free to contact me anytime in the future - all the best
