I'm looking for the exact source (book, including page number) for the
following quote:
?It is not necessary to change. Survival is not mandatory.? W. Edwards Deming
Speed is of the essence. Thanks!

I think pinkfreud-ga may well be right about this...it is a legitimate
Deming quote, but from the spoken rather than the written record.
The best evidence may be this note from no less an authority than the
Deming Institute:

I have never been able to find that quote in Deming's books. Maybe he
wrote it in an article somewhere but I know that he said that sort of
thing in his four day seminars. Here are two examples taken from the video of
his four day seminar.
"Nobody need learn. Survival is not compulsory."
"Survival is not compulsory, you know. A matter of choice."
-----
Note that the video is available from the Demining Institute, and
could serve as a reference citation.
Does that information meet your needs?

P.S. As for the Darwin quote, I'm familiar with Darwin's style of
writing, and the quote just doesn't ring true to me.

If the quote was given as part of a speech, as pinkfreud suggests, do
you know how I might cite that? And is that source (bill s.) part of
the deming institute?
Thanks!

narrative-ga,
The link I provided earlier was a note posted by Bill Radcliff, who
does, indeed, work at the Deming Institute.
The videos themselves, oddly, don't seem to have a clear-cut title,
but the best citation is probably:
Deming Four Day Video Seminar
1992
The W. Edwards Deming Institute

I don't think the videos will serve. I'm more interested in the people
quoted by Bill S., because that seems to be a source from a speech. Is
he a member of the Deming Institute? If not, who are the women he
quotes?
thanks

I was confusing Bill R. and Bill S....sorry!
Perhaps with more searching, someone will turn up something useful for you.

Thanks for trying. Pinkfreud, if you happen to know who Bill S. is,
I'd appreciate it.
Thanks,
