What are the current explanations for precognitive dreams? I'm in a new relationship, both of us are constantly having deja vu while we're together, and last weekend I was shocked when I realized that a dream that I had four years ago was instantiated, to a tee. I had dreamt that I was in a hotel room with an as-yet unknown man, when he looked out the window and uttered a sentence. Last weekend my partner uttered the very same words, in the very same circumstance, and my dream came flooding back to me. We're both very "scientifically inclined," and don't know what to make of this. Help? |

Nothing is proven or completely accepted, but I have a few suggestions for topics you might want to research: REM sleep and dream state (we dream a lot more than we remember) Memory distortion and false recall (we sometimes "remember" things clearly yet incorrectly) Memory formation time, biology, chemistry (memories aren't formed the way you might think) One problem with searching for scientific evidence regarding "precognitive dreams" is that not everyone calls it that. In fact, if someone uses that word regularly, they are probably leaning one direction already. Therefore, using those two words as the only search terms might limit your range of information. A common theory makes use of speculation on large numbers of forgotten dreams, recall only of specific dreams due to a real-life cue, and memory distortion. You might see where that is headed. While this or any other theory on precognitive dreams is not proven, if you study the tons of research on memory and dreams you will find that the underlying components are sometimes proven fact and other times just a whole lot more likely than seeing the future in dreams. There is a lot to learn about memory, and after you learn only some of it you will probably start to see this precognitive dream situation as a lot less remarkable than you thought. |
